New Maruti Wagon R 2018 will be based on the brand’s new TECT (Total Effective Control Technology).
India’s largest passenger car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki aims to grow its UV (Utility Vehicle) product lineup with three all-new models. Besides this, the Indo-Japanese carmaker will also overhaul its existing models including WagonR, Alto and Baleno. While the first two models are set for a generation change, the Baleno hatchback will receive its first mid-life facelift this year. The product we are discussing here is the new Maruti WagonR 2018, which has been spotted testing for the first time on Indian roads. For people not in the known, Suzuki has already launched the new generation WagonR and WagonR Stingray in the Japanese market. Though, India-spec model will have different design and features. The new Maruti WagonR 2018 model will receive an all-new design along with a pack of comfort and safety features. Though, it will continue to feature the tall-boy design, crossover-ish styling bits and the high ground clearance. Similar to the new-gen Swift, the 2018 WagonR will be developed on the brand’s new HEARTECT platform. The new model will be lighter, stiffer and safer than the current car. Interior will have more features to offer. Similar to the Swift, the new generation Wagon R might see a new touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration.
The new generation WagonR is likely to feature the existing 1.0-litre K-Series engine with a 5-speed manual or AGS gearbox option. Favored for its practicality, spacious cabin and efficient engine, the WagonR recently achieved a sales milestone of 20 lakh units in India. In fact, the hatchback has been among the top five bestselling cars in the country from last a decade. There is no official confirmation about the new Wagon R’s India launch date and details. It was speculated that Maruti might showcase the hatchback’s new-generation model at the 2018 Auto Expo; that didn’t happen. Since Maruti has started testing the new version, it is expected that the launch could take place in the second half of 2018. We will update our readers as soon as Maruti announces its launch details.

With the arrival of new models like Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid, the competition in the small car segment gets fierce. The India-spec 2018 Maruti Wagon R is likely to be powered by the existing 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine that also powers the Celerio and Alto K10. This engine is capable of producing 67bhp of power and 91Nm of torque. With lighter platform and updated engine, the new WagonR is expected to offer better acceleration and steering feedback. In the Japanese market, the hatchback’s new model comes in three trims – FA, FX hybrid and FZ hybrid. The standard variant derives its power from a 660cc, three-cylinder petrol engine delivering a maximum power output of 51bhp against 50Nm of peak torque. The hybrid motor churns out a top power of 3.1bhp and 50Nm of torque. Similarly, the Wagon R Stingray carline is available in one standard (L) and two hybrid (T and X) variants pushing out 65bhp and 98Nm of torque. A CVT gearbox comes as standard across the carline. The new-gen model uses hi-tensile steel and TECT technology that will make it lighter and stiffer than the current generation. It will also aid to the fuel efficiency of the car. Sporting an all-new design language and bits, the 2018 Maruti Wagon R will appear different from the current generation. However, there is no indication whether the India-bound model will follow the same design and styling principles used for the Japan-spec version. That said, the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will be designed on Suzuki’s new platform that will make it lighter and stiffer than before. In fact, it will improve safety quotient of the car. It will continue to feature the tall-boy stance and boxy design elements.
Going by the spy picture, it is visible that the new WagonR is slightly bigger than the outgoing model. The model comes equipped with split headlamps, new front grille, more sculpted bumper and flat hood. ORVMs are now positioned on the door instead of the pillar like the outgoing Wagon R. It also has flared fenders and a prominent muscular line that runs across the length of the car.
The Japan-spec hatchback features new chromed grille flanked by new squarish headlamps, revised bumper, a larger airdam and shortened bonnet at the front end. On the other hand, the Stingray has a more edgy bonnet, angular headlamps and two-part grille. It has trapezoidal airdam, more muscular front bumper and vertical fog lamp. From the sides, the car has van-like appearance with bold creases and more prominent wheel arches. While the Japanese model measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width and 1,660mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,460mm, the Indian version is 3,599mm long, 1,495mm wide, 1,670mm tall along with a 2,400mm of wheelbase. Check Out – Upcoming Maruti Cars In India
Interior of the Japan-spec new Wagon R has more up-market appeal with additional comfort and safety features. There is a tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system situated below the new dashboard with a centre-mounted instrument cluster. The AirCon vent has been stretched to the length of the entire dashboard. While the Wagon R has beige interior, the Stingray gets all-black cabin with red highlights. There is no clarity whether the India-bound will have all these features or not.
