Maruti Suzuki is on a roll. After the successful launch of the new-generation Drize and Swift, the Indo-Japanese carmaker is now gearing up for two big products of the year – the new Ertiga MPV and the new WagonR hatchback. While the former will be the first one to arrive in the market, the latter one will hit roads in the second half of 2018. The new Maruti WagonR 2018, which has been spotted multiple times during its test rounds, will witness comprehensive design upgrades along with a pack of new features. Similar to Maruti Suzuki’s new breed cars, the new Maruti WagonR 2018 will use the brand’s new generation HEARTECT platform making it lighter, stiffer and safer than the current car. However, the hatchback will continue to feature the tall-boy design, crossover-ish styling bits and the high ground clearance. Interior will have more space and features to offer. The new generation Wagon R might also get a new touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration as we have seen in the new Swift. Favored for its practicality, spacious cabin and efficient engine, the WagonR recently achieved a sales milestone of 20 lakh units in India. In fact, the hatchback has been among the top five bestselling cars in the country from last a decade. Official launch date and details of the new-gen Wagon R hasn’t yet revealed by the carmaker. Though, the reports suggest that it might go on sale in the second half of this year. With the arrival of new models like Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid, the competition in the small car segment gets fierce. In order to keep up its game, Maruti Suzuki is preparing the new-generation Wagon R model with an all-new design, better interior quality and features and more efficient engine setup. One of the prominent changes will include Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform that make the car compliant to new safety norms. All these merits will surely make it more expensive than the existing model. Currently, the hatchback is available within the price range of Rs 4.1 lakh – Rs 5.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). We expect that the new Maruti Wagon R 2018 price in India will start from Rs 4.50 lakh for the entry-level variant and Rs 5.50 lakh for the top-end model.
As mentioned in the beginning, the India-spec 2018 Maruti Wagon R might continue to come with the existing 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine. This motor also does duty in the Celerio and the Alto K10. The power and torque outputs of gasoline unit stand at 67bhp at 6,200rpm and 91Nm at 3,500rpm respectively. It can accelerate 0-100kmph in 18.6 seconds, while delivering a top speed of 152kmph. However, the new, lighter platform will help the 2018 Maruti WagonR to offer better acceleration and steering feedback. In the Japanese market, the hatchback’s new model comes in three trims – FA, FX hybrid and FZ hybrid. Powering the standard variant is a 660cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that develops a maximum power output of 51bhp against 50Nm of peak torque. The hybrid motor produces a peak power of 3.1bhp and 50Nm of torque. Similarly, the Wagon R Stingray carline is available in one standard (L) and two hybrid (T and X) variants offering power worth 65bhp against 98Nm of torque. A CVT gearbox comes as standard across the carline. The hatchback can be brought either with the 2WD (two-wheel-drive) or the 4WD (four-wheel-drive) system. The new-gen model uses hi-tensile steel and TECT technology that will make it lighter and stiffer than the current generation. Furthermore, the new platform will also aid to its fuel efficiency. It would be a tad early to comment on figures, though it will surely be more frugal than the existing one. Currently, the hatchback offers a claimed mileage of 20.51kmpl. Featuring an all-new design language and bold stance, the 2018 Maruti Wagon R will appear different from the current generation. However, there is no indication whether the India-bound model will follow the same design and styling principles used for the Japan-spec version. That said, the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will be based on Suzuki’s new platform that will make it lighter and stiffer than before. It will also improve safety quotient of the car. The hatchback will retain its signature tall-boy stance and boxy design elements.
Upfront, the hatchback will feature sweptback headlamps similar to the JDM-spec Suzuki WagonR Stingray. It will also feature new front grille, more sculpted bumper and a flat hood. The ORVMs will be shifted on the door instead of the pillar like the outgoing Wagon R. Features such as flared fenders and a prominent muscular line running across the length of the car will further enhance its new look. The Japan-spec Suzuki Wagon R features new chromed grille flanked by new squarish headlamps, revised bumper, a larger airdam and shortened bonnet. The Stingray, on the other hand, has a more edgy bonnet, angular headlamps and two-part grille. It has trapezoidal airdam, more muscular front bumper and vertical fog lamp. Moving to sides, the hatchback has van-like appearance with bold creases and more prominent wheel arches. Round the back, the car features low-placed horizontal tail lights, new roof-mounted spoiler and a large rear windshield.
While the Japanese model measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width and 1,660mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,460mm, the Indian version is 3,599mm long, 1,495mm wide, 1,670mm tall along with a 2,400mm of wheelbase. Check Out – Upcoming Maruti Cars In India
Interior of the Japan-spec new Wagon R has more up-market appeal with additional comfort and safety features. There is a tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system situated below the new dashboard with a centre-mounted instrument cluster. The AirCon vent has been stretched to the length of the entire dashboard. While the Wagon R has beige interior, the Stingray gets all-black cabin with red highlights. If reports are to be believed, the India-spec 2018 Maruti WagonR will come with an all-new interior. It will have new dashboard design, new steering, new instrument console and air-con vents. The top-spec model is likely to get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone app integrations such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. For passengers’ safety and security, the hatchback could get ABS with EBD and dual front airbags as standard. Moreover, the new-generation HEARTECT platform and better structural enhancements will make the new Wagon R compliant to new safety norms.
