Maruti Suzuki is on a roll. After the successful launch of the new-generation Drize and Swift, the Indo-Japanese carmaker is now gearing up for two big products of the year – the new Ertiga MPV and the new WagonR hatchback. While the former will be the first one to arrive in the market, the latter one will hit roads in the second half of 2018. The new Maruti WagonR 2018, which has been spotted multiple times during its test rounds, will witness comprehensive design upgrades along with a pack of new features. Similar to Maruti Suzuki’s new breed cars, the new Maruti WagonR 2018 will use the brand’s new generation HEARTECT platform making it lighter, stiffer and safer than the current car. However, the hatchback will continue to feature the tall-boy design, crossover-ish styling bits and the high ground clearance. Interior will have more space and features to offer. The new generation Wagon R might also get a new touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration as we have seen in the new Swift. Engine setup of the 2018 Maruti WagonR might remain unchanged – i.e. a 1.0-litre K-Series petrol unit with a 5-speed manual and AGS gearbox option.
Favored for its practicality, spacious cabin and efficient engine, the WagonR recently achieved a sales milestone of 20 lakh units in India. In fact, the hatchback has been among the top five bestselling cars in the country from last a decade. Official launch date and details of the new-gen Wagon R hasn’t yet revealed by the carmaker. However, the reports in media suggest that it might go on sale in the second half of this year. With the arrival of new models like Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid, the competition in the small car segment gets fierce. In order to keep up its game, Maruti Suzuki is considering a generation change for its highly-popular WagonR hatchback. The new-generation version will come with an all-new design, better interior quality and features and more efficient engine setup. One of the prominent changes will include Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform that make the car compliant to new safety norms and make it lighter, safer and more frugal than the current model. All these merits will surely make it more expensive than the outgoing model. Currently, the hatchback is available within the price range of Rs 4.1 lakh – Rs 5.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). We expect that the prices of the new Maruti Wagon R 2018 will fall in the range of Rs 4.50 lakh (for the entry-level variant) – Rs 5.50 lakh (for the top-end model).
Under the hood, the India-spec 2018 Maruti Wagon R is likely feature the same 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine. This gasoline unit also does duty in the Celerio and the Alto K10. This motor can produce a maximum power output of 67bhp at 6,200rpm and a peak torque of 91Nm at 3,500rpm. Packed with the 1.0L engine, the hatchback can mark 0-100kmph in 18.6 seconds, and offer a top speed of 152kmph. However, the new, lighter platform will help the 2018 Maruti WagonR deliver better acceleration and steering feedback. In the Japanese market, the hatchback’s new model comes in three trims – FA, FX hybrid and FZ hybrid. The standard variant derives its power from a 660cc, three-cylinder petrol engine churning out a top power of 51bhp against 50Nm of torque. The hybrid motor can deliver a top power of 3.1bhp against 50Nm of torque. Similarly, the Wagon R Stingray carline is available in one standard (L) and two hybrid (T and X) variants producing a maximum power output of 65bhp and 98Nm of torque. Maruti Suzuki will make use of the TECT technology and lots hi-tensile steel that will make the 2018 Maruti WagonR lighter and stiffer than the current generation. Furthermore, the new platform will add more to its frugal nature. It would be a tad early to comment on figures, though it will surely be more fuel economical than the existing one. Featuring an all-new design language and bold stance, the 2018 Maruti Wagon R will appear more refreshing than the current generation. However, there is no indication whether the India-bound model will follow the same design and styling principles used for the Japan-spec version. That said, the new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 2018 will be based on Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform that will make it lighter and stiffer than before. It will also improve safety quotient of the car. It’s the same architecture that has been used in the new-generation Swift hatchback and Dzire compact sedan. The new WagonR will retain its signature tall-boy stance and boxy design elements.
Similar to the JDM-spec Suzuki WagonR Stingray, the face of the India-spec model will be completely revised with sweptback headlamps. It will also feature new front grille, more sculpted bumper and a longer bonnet. The ORVMs will be shifted on the door instead of the pillar like the outgoing Wagon R. Features such as flared fenders and a prominent muscular line running across the length of the car will further enhance its new look. The Japan-spec Suzuki Wagon R features a new chromed grille flanked by new squarish headlamps, revised bumper, a larger airdam and shortened bonnet. The Stingray, on the other hand, has a more edgy bonnet, angular headlamps and two-part grille. It has trapezoidal airdam, more muscular front bumper and vertical fog lamp. Moving to sides, the hatchback has van-like appearance with bold creases and more prominent wheel arches. Round the back, the car features low-placed horizontal tail lights, new roof-mounted spoiler and a large rear windshield.
Compared to the India-spec version, the Japanese model carries a more boxy design. The overall length, width and height of the Japan-spec model measure 3,395mm, 1,475mm and 1,660mm respectively. It has a wheelbase of 2,460mm. Whereas, the existing India-spec WagonR measures 3,599mm in length, 1,495mm in width and 1,670mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,400mm. Maruti Suzuki will make comprehensive changes inside the cabin as well. While the interior pictures of the India-spec 2018 Maruti WagonR are yet to be revealed, it is likely to get an all-new design along with a pack of new comfort goodies and safety fitments. The dashboard design will be revised, it will also get a new instrument console, new steering and air-con vents. Rumour has it that Maruti might offer a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the range-topping trim of the hatch. In terms of safety, the new Maruti Wagon R 2018 might ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake force distribution) and dual front airbags as standard across the carline. With the new-generation HEARTECT platform and better structural enhancements, the hatchback new-generation model will meet the new safety norms.
The Japan-spec 2018 WagonR, on the other hand, comes equipped with a tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system placed below the new dashboard with a centre-mounted instrument cluster. The AirCon vent has been stretched to the length of the entire dashboard. While the Wagon R has beige interior, the Stingray gets all-black cabin with red highlights. There is no clarity whether the India-bound will have all these features or not.
