Mahindra S201

After introducing the new Marazzo and Alturas G4, Mahindra is gearing up for the launch of new sub-4 meter SUV – codenamed S201. It will be the brand’s 3rd model to be based on the monocoque chassis, which is basically the SsangYong Tivoli’s X100 platform. This SUV will be equipped with several segment-first features like sunroof, all-4 disc brakes, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear AC Vents, etc.

The Mahindra S201 is rumoured to be called Mahindra Inferno or Mahindra XUV300, though official announcement is yet to be made. It is likely to be the most powerful SUV in its category. The SUV will be powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine that also powers the Marazzo. It will also mark the debut of Mahindra’s new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that could produce up to 135PS of power.

Launch – January 2019
Expected Price – Rs 7 lakh – Rs 11 lakh

Hyundai STYX

Korean automaker, Hyundai will finally enter into the sub-4 meter SUV space in India. The company will launch the new Santro’s platform based small SUV, codenamed QXi. It is likely to be called Hyundai STYX, and will challenge the likes of Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza. With this SUV, Hyundai will also introduce the new 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a new 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine. The SUV will share most of the styling cues from the Creta and other Hyundai’s global SUVs including Kona and Santa Fe.

Launch – March-April 2019
Expected Price – Rs 7.5 lakh – Rs 12 lakh

Tata Hornbill

Next in our list of top 5 upcoming small SUVs is the Tata’s upcoming micro SUV. Codenamed Hornbill, the small SUV will be positioned below the Nexon and will be the most affordable SUV from Tata in India. The SUV will challenge the likes of Mahindra KUV100 NXT and Maruti Ignis. It is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The diesel engine could be shared with the Tata Tiago.

Launch – 2020
Expected Price – Rs 5 lakh – Rs 7 lakh

Maruti Suzuki Y1K/New ZEN

India’s leading carmaker, Maruti Suzuki had showcased the Concept Future S at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The company will launch an all-new small SUV based on this concept in 2019. Codenamed Y1K, the new compact SUV will rival the likes of Mahindra KUV100 NXT and the upcoming Tata Hornbill. Exact details about the SUV are yet to be announced, but media reports claim that the small SUV could be called the new Maruti Suzuki ZEN.

Launch – 2019-20
Expected Price – Rs 5 lakh – Rs 7 lakh

Kia sub-4 meter SUV

Korean automaker, Kia will officially enter into India in 2019. The company will launch a 5-seater premium SUV based on the SP concept. The second product from the Korean automaker will be the sub-4 meter SUV, which will be launched in 2020. The small SUV will challenge the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport. It will share mechanics with Hyundai’s upcoming small SUV.

Expected Price – Rs 8 lakh – Rs 12 lakh
