Maruti S-Presso

The Maruti S Presso will be a sub Rs 5 lakh car and will aim at first time car buyers in India.

It was reported that the Maruti Suzuki Future S concept based small crossover will be called the new Suzuki ZEN. ET Auto claims that the upcoming entry-level model will be called the Maruti S-Presso. It is the production version of the Concept Future S, which was showcased at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. It is claimed to be launched in the country during the festive season, most probably around September-October 2019.

The Maruti S Presso will be a sub Rs 5 lakh car and will aim at first time car buyers in India. This is the first small car conceptualised by the Indian R&D unit, with design and engineering based out of Rohtak, Haryana with support from Suzuki Motor, Japan. The S-Presso will come with a bold SUV-ish styling and will challenge the Renault Kwid and the upcoming Tata H2X micro SUV.

With this locally developed and designed product, Maruti Suzuki is aiming to save the royalty payment. The company paid 5.3% of its net sales as royalty to its parent Suzuki Motor in FY-19. For the S-Presso, Maruti Suzuki is expected to pay a royalty of less than 4% to its parent company.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, codenamed Y1K, is likely to be powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine that also powers the Alto K10 and the Wagon R. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual and an AMT unit. It is also expected to receive the segment-leading touchscreen infotainment system with rear parking camera. The company could also offer the dual-tone exterior paint scheme to appeal to the young buyers.

Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder and speed alert will come as standard safety features. It will be based on the Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform that also underpins the new Wagon R tall-boy hatchback. The crossover will be retailed through Maruti Arena outlets. This model will sit alongside the likes of Maruti Celerio and the Wagon R hatchback.
