Tata Motors today launched its long-awaited subcompact SUV, Nexon at an astonishing price of Rs 5.85 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The festive launch altogether with aggressive introductory pricing should work in favour of the model, which also marks company’s debut into the highly-contested subcompact SUV space. While Nexon will go squarely against top players including Ford EcoSport and Maruti Viatara Brezza, the lucrative pricing puts it in the crosshairs of other similarly priced models which include premium hatchbacks and subcompact sedans. Among the premium hatchbacks, Nexon will face competition from Honda Jazz, Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and Maruti Baleno that carry a similar pricing. From the subcompact sedan space, the top rivals include the all new Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Ameo and Hyundai Xcent primarily.


In terms of styling, Nexon features ivory white accents on front fog lamps, side beltline and tailgate, signature LED tail lamps, cladded wheel arches, door side cladding, ORVMs with turn indicators etc. While features such as projector headlamps, 16-inch machine-cut alloy wheels, feline-eye shapes DRLs, sonic silver dual tone roof colour etc are reserved for the top-spec variants. The three-tone interiors are spacious and upmarket, thanks to the use of premium quality material. It packs in standard cup/can holder on central console, glove box with integrated 2 cup holders, laptop/table storage in glovebox, 1L bottle holder on all doors, handbag hooks, carry bag hooks etc.

While the segment first grand central console with front armrest & sliding tambour, rear seat central armrest with 2 cup-holders and 60:40 split rear seats are available on the top-spec XZ+ trim. Similarly, the 6.5-inch floating dash-top touchscreen by Harman with Android Auto, Juke-Car App and other infotainment options are also restricted to the range topping variant. While front power window, multi drive modes, electric power steering with tilt adjustment etc are standard and features such as smart key with push-button start, driver seat height adjuster, adjustable rear seat head rest and driver side express-down power window come only with the XZ+. Prominent safety bits like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD are standard, whereas rear parking camera, rear defogger, IRVM, rear fog lamp etc are some additional features on the XZ+.

Tata Nexon Price-

The petrol variants in the Nexon carline are priced in the range of Rs 5.85 lakh to Rs 8.59 lakh and the diesel variants are available from Rs 6.85 lakh to Rs 9.44 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory prices).

Tata Nexon Vs Maruti Baleno Price Comparison-

Maruti’s premium hatchback Baleno is available in petrol and diesel variants. The petrol trims are priced between Rs 5.26 lakh and Rs 8.34 lakh. Whereas the diesel line-up falls between Rs 6.43 lakh to Rs 8.42 lakh.

Tata Nexon Hyundai Elite i20 Price Comparison-

Hyundai’s popular premium hatchback, Baleno is available from Rs 5.32 lakh and the top-spec petrol AT variant is priced at Rs 9.09 lakh. Diesel version on the other hand is priced in the range of Rs 6.60 lakh to Rs 8.97 lakh.

The very capable Volkswagen Polo hatchback is available from Rs 5.41 lakh, while the fully loaded top-spec GT 1.2L TSI petrol trim can be had for Rs 9.19 lakh. Diesel Polo on the other hand falls between Rs 6.92 lakh to Rs 9.33 lakh.

Honda re-launched Jazz in India after two years’ gap with aesthetic changes, better kit and a new diesel engine. Currently, the petrol-powered model is priced from Rs 5.89 lakh to Rs 8.42 lakh. Diesel range is slightly pricier with prices falling in the range of Rs 7.23 lakh to Rs 9.19 lakh.

Honda’s first diesel model for the Indian market is up for a generation change. The petrol version of the subcompact sedan is priced between Rs 5.50 lakh to Rs 8.35 lakh opposed to diesel range which starts from Rs 6.65 lakh and goes up to Rs 8.40 lakh.

Tata’s new compact SUV will directly fight against the oldest car in its league, Ford EcoSport, which is also ready to receive a major makeover around this festive season. Interestingly, Nexon manages to undercut its closest rival by around 1.3 lakh. The EcoSport carline is priced between Rs 7.17 lakh to Rs 10.78 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the Nexon is tagged at Rs 5.85 lakh for base model and 9.44 lakh for top-end diesel car.

Maruti Vitara Brezza is currently the top-selling SUV in the country. Maruti manages to sell over 10,000 units of the car every month, since its launch in 2016. With aggressive pricing, Nexon could be the real threat to the dominance of Brezza. The Vitara is only available in diesel guise, priced between 7.23 lakh to Rs 9.91 lakh, While the petrol model is expected to come soon.

Another model in this compact SUV space is the Honda WRV, which has been receiving excellent response from car buyers. With Nexon priced aggressively at Rs 5.85 lakh, it could impact the sales of the WRV that is priced between Rs 7.66 lakh and Rs 9.91 lakh.
