Tata Motors has shown a steady improvement over the last few years – all credit goes to its futuristic design language and new business strategy. The new breed Tata cars are a far cry from the company’s old models whether its design, comfort and drivability. Aiming to keep up the momentum, the home-grown carmaker introduced the new-generation IMPACT Design 2.0 philosophy at the Auto Expo 2018. Underpinning the Tata 45X premium hatchback and Tata H5X SUV concepts, the new design language looks bolder and edgier than its first generation.
The carmaker claims that the “Tata 45X is an amalgamation of futuristic design, advanced technology, intuitive connectivity and great performance”. The all-new 45X premium hatchback concept is the Tata’s first car to use the new AMP (Advanced Modular Platform). Described as ‘Agile Light Flexible Advanced’ architecture, the new platform is said to be compatible for different lengths, widths, wheelbases and suspension setups. Interestingly, the new Tata 45X hatchback has been designed jointly by Tata’s three design studios (Pune, Italy and UK) with inputs from Jaguar Land Rover. The new Tata hatchback will be positioned against the the Maruti Baleno and the Hyundai Elite i20, which are currently dominating the segment.

Tata Motors unveiled its much-awaited premium hatchback – 45X – in its concept form at the Delhi Auto Expo in February, 2018. Interestingly, the hatchback also marked the debut of Tata’s new AMP scalable platform featuring monocoque design. The carmaker has already confirmed that its new AMP platform based models will begin rolling out in 2019. Since the 45X is currently in its concept phase, it will take good one year to hit showrooms. As mentioned in the beginning, the new 45X hatch is the first Tata car to be based on new advanced modular platform (AMP). Compatible to multiple wheelbases, lengths, widths and suspensions, the architecture will be quite economical for Tata to develop new cars of different sizes. Furthermore, the local manufacturing will help the carmaker achieve competitive pricing. In the premium hatchback space, the new Tata car will face challenge from multiple cars such as Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. Prices of the Tata 45X are likely to start from Rs 5 lakh for the entry-level variant and go all the way up to Rs 8 lakh for the high-spec trim. Tata’s new-generation IMPACT Design 2.0 philosophy made its world premiere with the all-new 45X hatchback and the H5X SUV concepts early this year. Carrying bold and futuristic design, the car features more prominent three-dimensional ‘Humanity Line’ underlining a digitally-inspired front grille and dual ultra slim LED headlamps. Its fog lamp assembly has a new ‘tri-arrow’ pattern. Styling elements such as strong fenders and class-leading wheel sizes with flared wheel arches will further enhance its road presence. The grille seems inspired by the Hexa SUV. The projector headlamps are integrated with LED daytime running lights (DRLs).
The first thing you will notice at the side profile of the car are the unique rear door handles which are integrated to C-pillar. The same pattern is also seen on the new Maruti Swift and the Mahindra KUV100 NXT. The tapered roofline, plastic cladding around the body and pronounced wheel arches further enhance its sporty side looks. Round the back, the car gets full LED taillights, surfboard mounted wing cameras and a spoiler. The slingshot line with a chrome finisher adds more its sporty appearance. The overall length, width and height of the new Tata hatchback stand at 4,253mm, 1,850mm and 1,451mm respectively. It sits on a wheelbase of 2,630mm, which is around 230mm longer than the Tiago. Interior of the new Tata car looks familiar as it shares most of its design bits and features with the Nexon compact SUV. However, it has more premium and futuristic appeal. Similar to Tata’s new breed cars, the 45X hatchback has premium quality material, fit and finish. It gets a touchscreen infotainment system, which is compatible to smartphone apps such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is also supports navigation system.
Other key highlights include a multi-layered design, a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, instrument cluster and Indian lattice-work inspired rear AC. As of now, the technical details of the new Tata hatchback are not available. Though, it is likely to be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. Powering the petrol version of the hatchback could be a 1.2-litre, turbo engine that dishes out a peak power of 108bhp and 170Nm of torque. On the other hand, the diesel version might derive its power from a 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder VGT motor that’s good enough for 108bhp and a peak torque of 260Nm. Since the engine details are yet to be confirmed, it would be tad early to comment on its mileage figures. Though, it is expected to be high on fuel efficiency.
