Tata Motors will launch an all-new mid-sized sedan in 2020 to challenge the dominance of Honda City.

We informed you earlier that Honda is readying the new-generation City sedan for the Indian market. Scheduled to be launched in early 2020, the new Honda City will receive major changes in the form of design and interior quality. Moreover, it will come with a mild-hybrid system coupled to a BSVI compliant petrol engine. This model is most likely to be launched at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo.

What’s interesting is that Tata Motors will re-enter into the mid-sized sedan segment in 2020. The company is readying a mid-sized sedan, which is likely to use the new Alpha modular platform. This modular platform will be used to develop cars below 4.3 meters in length. Tata could also use the new OMEGA ARC platform, though it will be expensive for a mid-sized sedan.

Tata’s new mid-sized sedan is also likely to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo. The launch is most likely to take place in the mid-2020, post BS6 emission norms. It is expected to share styling cues from the E-Vision sedan, which debuted earlier this year. Though, E-Vision is bigger and an all-electric concept.

Coming back to the new City, the popular sedan will grow in size and will have better quality interior. The increase in size will contribute to more cabin space. It will receive more modern features including an advanced touchscreen infotainment with new-age connectivity features. The sedan will receive a 1.5-litre petrol engine coupled to a mild-hybrid system and a BSVI compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both engines will be paired to a CVT automatic unit. On the flip-side, Tata’s mid-sized sedan will share mechanics and features with the upcoming premium hatchback based on the 45X concept. Likely to be called Tata Aquilla, the hatchback will be powered by the BSVI compliant 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine.
