With the recent announcement of price reduction across Maruti range, save for SHVS variants of Ertiga & Ciaz, the smallest SUV in the company’s range, Maruti Ignis has become more affordable, thanks to the revised GST tax slab. The difference is price ranges between Rs 3,000 to Rs 26,000, with prices starting from Rs 4.56 lakh and going up to Rs 7.54 lakh against the previous Rs 4.59 lakh and Rs 7.8 lakh (all, ex-showroom Pan India).
With the recent drop in prices, carmakers are hopeful to register growth in sales in the coming months. Retailed through Nexa, Ignis is the most affordable model in Maruti’s premium range. The mini-SUV was launched earlier this year in January and goes straight against arch rival, Mahindra KUV100 in the segment. Aside from catering to the domestic demand, the company also exports the model to the South African market, where it was launched recently.
In India, the SUV is powered by the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol unit with 81.8bhp at 6000rpm and 113Nm torque at 4000rpm. Diesel version sources power from the 1.3-litre DDiS unit which makes 74bhp at 4000rpm against 400Nm at 2000rpm. The carline comes with a 5-speed manual and an optional AMT unit. Maruti Ignis Exterior Design
Front Profile
Featuring crossover-like styling, the Ignis design reflects a combination of contemporary bits and retro elements. Up front, the vehicle has square-shaped projector headlamps with LED units and L-shaped daytime running lamps that infuses aggression. The chrome radiator grille looks bold, while the round shaped fog lamps on front bumper are in line with its retro-look.
Side Profile
The side profile of the Ignis looks boxy, but there are elements that offer sporty character to it. Blacked-out A and B pillars and thin cladding and metal work around the wheel arches add to its aggressive looks. The flared wheel arches have been fitted to multi-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels.
Rear Profile
The rear on the other hand could have been sportier, the small-wrap-around tail-lamps and a large plastic strip on the bumper fail to create the desired look. It has large bumper with black inserts, roof-mounted spoiler, windscreen wiper and flared rear wheel arches.

Maruti Ignis Interior
Quality
The cabin of the Ignis is one of the finest ones among existing Maruti Suzuki cars. The plastic materials used feels top-notch; however, the plastic material on the door panels could have been better. Overall, the quality inside the cabin is decent and is surely better than its direct rival – Mahindra KUV100.
Spaciousness/Seating
Despite being 3,700mm in length, the Ignis offers a decent space to accommodate four adults comfortably. However, the fifth occupant could get uncomfortable during long distance travel. The cabin offers good legroom, knee space and shoulder room, but the thigh support could have been better for rear occupants.
Comfort
In our review, we found that the car’s driver and front passenger seats are very comfortable and features good quality fabric. The front seats cushioning is good and seats are designed in a manner to accommodate all sizes of people. The Ignis driver seat also gets height adjustable feature. At the back, the seat is flat and offers fewer cushion for passengers. Legroom, headroom and knee space is good, but thigh support could have been better.
Practicality
There are lots of spaces inside the cabin to keep your belongings. It has big bottle holders in front doors and small bottle holders and a couple of mid-sized cubby holes in rear doors. There are two cup-holders at the front; however, the glove-box size could have been better.
Infotainment/Music System
The Ignis is equipped with SmartPlay infotainment system that comes with a tab-like touchscreen. This system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth, USB and AUX-in. The lower variants get conventional audio system with no touchscreen.
Features
Talking about features, the range-topping Alpha variant is equipped with LED projector headlamps with daytime running lamps, paddle lamps, SmartPlay infotainment system with remote app, automatic climate control, height adjustable driver’s seat and reversing camera. Other features available include integrated turn indicators on ORVMs, keyless entry, split-folding rear seats, rear defogger and wiper, etc.
Maruti Ignis Boot Space
Measuring just 3,700mm, the Ignis offers decent luggage space. It features split-folding rear seats, which will further increase the boot space. The crossover gets a boot space of 260-litres that can be further extended to 425-litres by folding the rear seats.
Maruti Suzuki Ignis Competition
Maruti has stepped into the niche segment that currently offers handful of offerings. The segment was officially kick-started by Mahindra KUV100, an arch rival to Ignis. Moreover, similarly priced models like Hyundai Grand i10 also pose threat to the hatchback.

Maruti Ignis Performance
City Performance
The Ignis is equipped with a highly refined petrol engine, which feels silent at idle. Due to its lighter weight, it feels faster than the Baleno that also features the same engine. The city performance of the car is very good. Thanks to its compact size, the crossover is easier to park and can go through busiest and narrowest of city roads. The 180mm of ground clearance can handle bad roads easily. The gearbox is smooth, and the clutch and brake pedals are light too. The diesel model too performs well, but it is not as silent as petrol model. There is a turbo lag on initial revs, but it feels peppy once crossed 2,000rpm.
Highway Performance
The petrol version performs well on highways too, and it is quicker than most of its direct rivals. Due to its raised height and high ground clearance, one can feel body roll on corners. It gets bouncy at higher speeds. The diesel, on the other hand, feels stable and performs reasonably well. It is not fast and you can cruise around 100-110kmph on highways.
Maruti Ignis Safety & Braking
The Ignis is loaded with several safety and security features. It is equipped with dual front airbags and ABS with EBD as standard safety feature. Other safety equipment include ISOFIX child seat anchorages, seat belt with pre-tensioners, force limiters, pedestrian protection, speed sensing auto door lock, driver seat belt reminder, rear parking sensor and camera and rear defogger and wiper. The suspension duties on the mini vehicle are carried over by McPherson Strut in front and Torsion Beam seat up at rear. Stopping power for the small SUV comes from rear disc and front drum brakes.
Should You Buy It?
Based on Suzuki’s new generation platform, the new Ignis is a very good city car. It also performs well on highways, but has some body-roll and it feels bouncy on high speeds. The petrol version with AMT gearbox can be a good option for people looking for an affordable automatic car. The diesel version too performs decent, but it could have been better. The petrol feels much faster and peppy than the diesel.
