We informed you earlier that Toyota is planning to launch a premium sedan – Vios in the country. According to ET Auto, the Japanese automaker will unveil the sedan the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The report further suggest that the Vios will be Toyota’s next big product in the market. Additionally, the company is also contemplating the Yaris hatchback to challenge the likes of Hyundai i20 and Maruti Baleno.
The Toyota Vios sedan will challenge the likes of Hyundai Verna, Honda City and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The mid-sized sedan will be launched in the Indian car market in 2018. However, Vios sedan in India will be developed on the Etios Core platform codenamed 231B. The current generation Vios was launched in 2013 and is reaching the end of its lifecycle. It is expected that the design of the India-spec Vios will be based on the next-generation Vios. However, the company will use the Etios’ platform to price it competitively in the market. The new model will be positioned between the Etios and Corolla Altis. The mid-sized sedan will be offered with two engine options – 1.4-litre 4-cylinder Dual VVT-i engine and 1.5-litre diesel. While the former is good for 108bhp and 140Nm of torque, the oil burner is likely to produce around 107bhp and 141Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic versions of the sedan will be on offer.
