With Maruti Ciaz and Honda City in its sight, the 2017 Hyundai Verna is priced between Rs 7.99 lakh – Rs 12.61 lakh.

Hyundai Motor India has finally rolled out the much-awaited new Hyundai Verna 2017 in the Indian market. Available in a total of four trims – E, EX, SX and SX (O) – the new Verna’s price ranges between Rs 7.99 lakh – Rs 12.61 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The prices are introductory and will be reserved for the first 20,000 customers of the car. In this price range, the vehicle will squarely go up against the Honda City and Maruti Ciaz. The third-generation Verna has witnessed comprehensive cosmetic and feature updates, while the engines setup has been carried over from the previous generation. Though, the new model has ditched the 1.4L petrol and diesel motors and continues to feature the larger capacity 1.6L gasoline and oil burner units. Both the engines have been calibrated to offer improved fuel economy over the outgoing model. Transmission options on the sedan include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox.

With an aim to withstand its arch rivals Honda City and Maruti Ciaz, the 2017 Hyundai Verna receives radical cosmetic upgrades in line with company’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. The car has also borrowed some of its styling cues from its larger sibling Elantra which also leaped into the new generation some time back. Major design updates include new projector LED daytime running lights, a cascade design chrome grille, projector fog lights with cornering lamps and chrome surrounds, LED taillamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and boot lid with chrome garnish and beltline. In line with the new exterior, the sedan also receives significant changes inside the cabin. The high-spec SX (O) trim is now exclusively offered with an Auto Link smartphone app and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Audroid Auto and Mirror Link connectivity and audio-video navigation and voice recognition. In addition, it also gets an eco coating on the air con evaporator to reduce odour, cruise control, ventilated front seats and 6 airbags. The lower-spec variants get a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard fitments.

Aside from these updates, the 2017 Hyundai Verna also features changed contours. The sedan’s new model measures longer (65mm) and wider (29mm) than the previous generation. There has been an increase in the wheelbase by 30mm, inferring more cabin space. The boot space has also been increased by 16L over the previous model.  With these changes, the model has witnessed 10kg increase in weight. As claimed by Hyundai, the new Verna uses K2 platform made up of high-strength steel which lends improved crash worthiness and rigidity. The chassis is stiffer and the suspension mechanism is all new as well. With prominent changes on the body structure, the new Hyundai Verna 2017 has also witnessed drop in NVH levels.

Engine setup for the new 2017 Verna sedan includes a 1.6-litre Gamma Dual VTVT petrol and a 1.6-litre U2 CRDi diesel unit that have been borrowed from the previous model. The power and torque figures of both the motors remain unchanged. The gasoline mill continues to develop a top power of 121bhp at 6,400rpm and 155Nm of torque at 4,850rpm. On the other hand, the oil burner is capable of pushing out a maximum power of 126bhp at 4,000rpm and 260Nm of torque between 1,500rpm – 3,000rpm. One must note that these engines have been calibrated by Hyundai to deliver more fuel economy. Transmission duties on the sedan are continue to be taken care of by a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Despite being sharing its engines with the old model, the new Hyundai Verna 2017 is slightly more fuel economical than its predecessor. The petrol manual version of the sedan returns 17.70kmpl and the automatic variant delivers 15.92kmpl. Besides the prominent cosmetic and feature updates, the 2017 Hyundai Verna receives subtle dimensional changes. That said, the new Verna is 65mm longer, 29mm wider and has 30mm longer wheelbase. This translates into more cabin space for the occupants and more space for storing luggage. The wheelbase of the new-gen Verna measures 2,600mm, and the overall length, width and height stand at 4,440mm, 1,729mm and 1,475mm respectively. Change in proportions aide 16-litre more space inside the luggage compartment while the overall weight has been increased by 10kg.

Hyundai has used a new K2 platform for the 2017 Verna sedan. The car sports styling changes in tandem with Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design tenet. The new architecture is made of high-strength steel aiding crash worthiness and rigidity. Besides, the suspension mechanism is all new, implying improved dynamics and handling. Some of the styling changes on the new Hyundai Verna 2017 are carried over from the all-new Elantra. In terms of styling changes, the face receives cascading grille flanked by projector headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights. The bonnet is new and the bumper has also been revised. There are pentagonal LED fog lamps and the air-dams are placed in centre of the sculpted bumper.

Moving towards the side, you will notice a sloping roofline, blacked-out C-pillar and chrome door handles. While the E and EX (MT) trims are assembled with 15-inch steel wheels with 185/65 R15 tyres as standard, the EX AT comes fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels. The range-topping S and SX (O) variants are exclusively available with 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and 195/55 R16 tyres. Changes have also be made to the rear end, as it gets redesigned headlamps with LED elements, LED turn indicators and a new integrated roof spoiler.

Styling updates to the interior are prominent including a new design for the dashboard and some features from the global spec model like a large 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link. The infotainment system additionally comes with voice recognition and app-based navigation. Instead of the 7.0-inch unit, the entry-level variants get a smaller 5.0-inch colour TFT LCD instrument display with Arkamys sound system.

The list of standard features on the Hyundai Verna 2017 also includes dual tone Beige & Black interior, Blue interior illumination, steering mounted tipmeter controls, front seat adjustable headrest, fabric seat upholstery, rear center armrest with cup holder, power windows and manual air conditioning. Features such as an Auto Link smartphone app, leather door center trim, leather seat upholstery and adjustable rear seat headrests are reserved for the top-spec SX (O) trim.

With respect to safety, the Hyundai Verna 2017 gets standard dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and all disc brakes. Safety equipments such as rear view camera, six airbags are restricted to the top-spec variant. The sedan also comes equipped with parking assists, ISOFIX child seat anchors, immobilizer, keyless entry, impact and speed sensing auto door unlock, central locking, rear defogger with timer, seat belt pretensioners, etc.
