After an exciting 2016 with the new generation Toyota Fortuner and Innova Crysta, Toyota started year 2017 with the launch of two of its eco-friendly cars – new Toyota Prius and the Toyota Camry hybrid. The company won’t launch any new product in India this year; however, 2018 Delhi Auto Expo will witness unveiling of range of new Toyota Cars. In a bid to further expand its product range, the Japanese maker is aiming to enter into new segments including compact SUV and mid-sized sedan space. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that it will launch the global Vios mid-sized sedan in the Indian market. The company is already selling the Etios sedan, which failed to live up to Toyota’s expectations. While Etios sedan will continue to be offered as a cheaper alternative to other mid-sized sedans, the Vios will be introduced as a premium offering. With this car, Toyota eyes venturing into the highly competitive segment which offers Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna. The Vios sedan is already on sale in select South East Asian markets. In India, the sedan has been spotted testing several times.
The new Vios will be offered with two engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel. While the former is capable of producing 107.5bhp and 141Nm of torque, the oil burner is good for 84bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. Media reports suggest that Toyota could also launch the hybrid version of the car. In terms of proportions, the upcoming sedan will measure 4,410mm in length, 1,700mm in width and 1,475mm in height. Wheelbase will estimate at 2,550mm inferring a spacious cabin. As for safety provisions, the sedan will equip dual front airbags and ABS. Styling and designing will resemble that of the Camry and Corolla sedans. Next model to join our list of upcoming Toyota cars in India is the Toyota Rush. Seeing the growing demand for compact SUVs, the Japanese car brand is aiming to enter into this segment with its global Rush compact SUV. However, the company is yet to make an official statement on the same. Already on sale in select Asian markets including Indonesia, the compact SUV will rival the Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Creta. Globally, the SUV derives power from the 1.5-litre VVT-i engine whereas in India, it could use the 1.4-litre oil burner from the Corolla Altis, good for top power of 84bhp and 200Nm of torque. Transmission duties will be carried out by the conventional five-speed manual transmission.
It is expected that Toyota could launch the new generation Rush, which is likely to borrow design cues from the new Fortuner. The front profile of the SUV will get projector headlamps with integrated indicators and large front bumper with fog lamps. Other key elements like pronounced wheel arched and mounted spare wheel at rear will lend an aggressive look to the SUV.
