Tata Altroz premium hatchback might hit showrooms in coming weeks.
Tata Altroz, the premium hatchback from the home-grown carmaker, is ready for its India launch. The company showed a camouflaged version of the hatchback in its latest teaser video. Promoted as ‘Urban Car, the Tata Altroz is the production ready version of the 45X concept that broke cover at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The carmaker says that its name ‘Altroz’ is inspired from the bird ‘Albatross’ and it offers “class-leading connectivity and thrilling performance” along with “futuristic design and advanced technology”.
In India, the Tata Altroz will lock horns against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo and the newly-launched Toyota Glanza. It is the brand’s first model designed on the new ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) modular platform. This architecture is versatile enough to accommodate different body styles – MPV, SUV, Sedan and Hatchback and multiple powertrains including petrol, diesel and electric and hybrid. Tata Altroz Launch Date
First previewed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the all-new Altroz will mark Tata’s re-entry into the premium hatchback that is currently dominated by Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20. Tata Motors aims to achieve competitive pricing with high level of localisation and using the new economical Alfa architecture. With Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20 in its sight, the new Tata premium hatchback is estimated to be priced around Rs 5.50 lakh for the entry-level petrol variant and up to Rs 9.0 lakh for the top-spec diesel trim. Tata’s all-new premium hatchback will come with both petrol and diesel powertrains. The Tata Altroz petrol will source its power from the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre 3-cylinder borrowed from Tiago. It delivers power worth 84bhp with 110Nm of torque. The hatchback will also source the 1.2L turbocharged petrol motor from the Nexon subcompact SUV. Its power and torque outputs stand at 108bhp and 170Nm respectively. The diesel version of the hatchback will be packed with the Nexon’s 1.5L Revotorq motor generating a peak power of 108bhp with 260Nm of torque. If reports are to be believed, the Tata Altroz might also get a 48-volt mild hybrid engine with an Integrated Start/Stop system or Integrated Starter System. When the car is in neutral and you release of the clutch, this system automatically switches off the engine. And when you press the clutch, the engine will switch on automatically. Transmission choices might include a 6-speed manual and an automatic gearbox.
Tata Altroz Mileage
Engine details of the new Tata premium hatchback are yet to be revealed by the carmaker. Though, it’s likely to get 1.2L petrol ad 1.5L diesel powertrains with manual and automatic gearboxes. We expect that the Tata Altroz will high on fuel efficiency. Its petrol version will deliver a mileage close to 18-20kmpl, and the diesel model will return around 25kmpl.
Tata Altroz Exterior Design
Tata’s new premium hatchback underpins the brand’s new scalable ALFA (Agile, Light, Flexible & Advanced) platform that is claimed to be adaptable to multiple body styles and capable of handling hybridisation and electrification. It also provides flat floor to maximise leg space, a class-leading luggage space and ensures utility created around the driver. After the Harrier, the Tata Altroz is the company’s second model to feature the new IMPACT 2.0 DESIGN philosophy. Design and styling of the hatchback stays true to the 45X concept. Upfront, the vehicle gets a slimmer prominent 3D ‘Humanity Line’ grille and high-placed ultra slim LED headlamps. It comes with projector headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights and fog lamp assembly right below the headlamp unit. The hatchback gets strong fenders, upswept beltline with strong creases that runs across the length, sloping roofline and flared wheel arches. While the previewed model was fitted with the 17-inch alloy wheels, the spied model was assembled with 16-inch alloys. The rear door handles are integrated to C-pillar, while the rear comes with full LED tail-lights and an integrated spoiler.
The overall length, width and height of the Altroz stand at 3988mm, 1754mm and 1505mm respectively. The hatch sits on a 2501mm long wheelbase.
Tata Altroz Interior
The Tata Altroz comes with all-black interior scheme with golden aluminium finish around the AC vents and silver accents on the door panels and steering wheel. The hatchback is claimed to have top-notch fit and finish along with high material quality. It features a 7.0-inch large free-standing touchscreen infotainment system positioned above the T-shaped centre console. The touchscreen infotainment will be compatible to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity along with the navigation system. It is claimed to offer ‘segment leading’ human-machine interface screens.
Tata is likely to offer Harman-sourced sound system with JBL speakers. The dashboard design is conventional, featuring analogue dials and T-shaped centre consoles with AC vents positioned below the touchscreen. Features such as multi-functional flat-bottom steering, automatic climate control, rear air-con vents, 12V socket, engine start/stop push button and steering mounted controls will also be on offer. Tata Altroz Safety Features
As mentioned in the beginning, Tata’s new Altroz hatchback underpins the new Alfa platform that will meet the upcoming crash test norms. Similar to the Tata Nexon, the hatch will offer robust body built along with a pack of advanced safety features. This list of standard safety fitment is likely to include dual front airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) and brake assist, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder and speed alert. It might also get rear parking camera.

Tata Altroz Preview
