Tata Motors has officially entered into the premium hatchback segment with the Altroz hatchback. The new Tata Altroz directly rivals the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz. It is the brand’s first model based on the new scalable, modular ALFA platform, which will also underpin the H2X micro SUV and a 5-seater premium SUV codenamed Blackbird. Tata Motors achieved aggressive pricing with high level of localisation and use of new economical Alfa platform. The petrol version is priced between Rs 5.29 lakh and Rs 7.69 lakh, while the diesel Altroz range starts at Rs 6.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.29 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki has announced to discontinue diesel Baleno from March 2020. It is available with 2 BSVI compliant petrol engines – a 1.2-litre and a 1.2-litre dualjet petrol with SHVS. The hatchback is priced in the range of Rs 5.67 lakh to Rs 9 lakh.

The Tata Altroz hatchback is available with 2 BSVI compliant engines – a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel. While the petrol engine is good for 83bhp and 115Nm of torque, the oil burner is capable of producing bhp of power and 260Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Maruti Baleno is available with 2 BSVI compliant petrol engine options – a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and a 1.2-litre DualJet petrol. While the former is good for 84bhp and 115Nm of torque, the dual-jet engine is capable of producing 89bhp and 113Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic (Petrol Only).

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Maruti Baleno is one of the most fuel efficient cars currently on sale in India. The petrol version of the Baleno is claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 21.01kmpl, while the dualJet engine delivers 23.87kmpl.

Tata Motors hasn’t revealed the fuel economy figures of the Altroz hatchback. The diesel model is expected to return around 25kmpl, while the petrol should deliver around 20kmpl.

In terms of proportions, the Altroz is 3,988mm in length, 1,754mm in width and 1,505mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,501mm. On the other hand, the Baleno is 3,995mm in length, 1,745mm in width and 1,510mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,520mm. The Altroz is 3mm longer and 9mm wider than the Baleno. However, the Altroz has the smallest wheelbase in its category.

The cabin of the Altroz is inspired by the Tata Nexon compact SUV, though it gets some changes in-line with the Tigor and Tiago. It gets an all-black interior scheme with aluminium finish around AC vents. It features a large floating-type infotainment system, which can also be controlled with buttons positioned below the screen. The audio and bluetooth telephony buttons are also placed on the steering wheel. Similar to the Harrier, the Tata Altroz has digital instrument conole. The infotainment system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include silver finish on door handles, automatic air-conditioning, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, etc.

The 2019 Maruti Baleno also gets the all-black interior scheme with silver treatment on the dashboard. The vehicle gets centrally mounted SmartPlay infotainment system and AC vents on either sides with chrome surround. The dashboard design is simple, but the central console looks busy. It also gets multi-functional steering wheel, automatic AC, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, etc.
