January 21, 2017 – Maruti Alto has been successfully ruling the roads for many years. First launched in the early 2000s, the Alto is a modern rendition of Maruti’s bread and butter model that sailed through easily in the A segment. During its product span, it has undergone various facelifts and now Maruti is working on the new generation model of the mini-hatchback expected to hit production either this year or next year. The new generation Maruti Alto 2017 is expected to undergo comprehensive design change, in line with the contemporary models in the budget space.
With its roots deep within, the Alto series has enjoyed a monopoly as far as the A segment goes. The prominence to design and styling in this space has led to a revolution with new models like Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-GO getting customers’ attention. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Hyundai Eon was the first attempt in this direction, but it became victim of overpricing. Nevertheless, slow and gradual change in the buying preference has led carmakers to think out of the box even when it comes to the low priced mini-hatchbacks.
As we had reported earlier, the 2017 Maruti Alto may be based on Suzuki’s patented entry level hatchback sketch that resembled Suzuki Alto Lapin. It is also believed that the new Maruti Alto could have crossover-ish design as seen in new-age mini-hatchbacks. With all these changes expected on the hatchback, the new Maruti Alto price in India could witness a slight bump. That said the new Maruti Alto price could start from Rs 3 lakh onwards.
The 2017 Maruti Alto is expected to underpin an all-new platform aiding weight loss, better performance and more fuel efficient. Rumours were abuzz that Maruti could use the 658cc petrol engine from the Japanese Suuzki Alto Lapin/Kei, though we expect the India-bound model to house the same 800cc engine from the current model. The engine however could be tuned for more power and is likely to be paired to the five-speed manual gearbox along with an AMT unit.
Early this year, Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) had patented a sketch of an entry-level hatchback that appeared quite identical to the Suzuki Alto Lapin. The company might use the same design for the new Maruti Alto 2017 and tweak it a bit for the Indian market. While there is very little information available as of now on the styling of the 2017 Maruti Alto, the final version is expected to have a more contemporary and crossover-ish design. The reason we say this is because of the fact that more and more people are going for vehicles with SUV-ish stance, and the success of Renault Kwid is the latest example.
There is no official word on the launch of the new-gen Alto therefore we presume the vehicle will take some time to take shape, before it hits production. We expect the new-gen model to launch either by end of 2017 or sometime in 2018.

|Top||Rs 4 lakh|
The 2017 Maruti Alto will reportedly see a price change. Most likely it will be priced upwards compared to the current model. With comprehensive cosmetic changes and mechanical updates underway, the new generation Alto could be priced between Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh (hypothetical price). The K10 model on the other hand is estimated to be priced between Rs 3.80 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh.
With those extra kilos shed off and the engine tuned for better performance, the new Alto 2017 could deliver 30kmpl of mileage as opposed to the current model that returns 24.7kmpl.
In the budget space, the 2017 Maruti Alto 800 will field against the likes of Renault Kwid, Hyundai Eon and Datsun redi-GO. From the above mentioned models, Kwid and Alto K10 are already available with AMT units and redi-GO will shortly receive an AMT equipped variant. As we have informed earlier that Hyundai Eon will undergo a facelift, it may get an AMT unit to compete with rivals.
This is all what we have for now, we’ll update you on this as soon as the company reveals something. Stay tuned to IndiaCarNews.
