Mahindra Y400 SUV – New Toyota Fortuner Rival Coming This October

The Mahindra Y400 7-seater SUV is likely to be cheaper than Toyota Fortuner & Ford Endeavour

Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown automaker will finally launch a new 7-seater flagship SUV – codenamed Y400 – in October 2019. Earlier planned to launch on October 9, 2018, the new Y400 launch has been delayed by few days. However, it will officially go on sale in the second half of October. This 7-seater SUV will be brand’s most expensive SUV and will take on the segment leaders like Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.

The new model is likely to be called Mahindra XUV700 or Mahindra Rexton. This 7-seater SUV is basically the re-badged version of the new-gen SsangYong Rexton, which is already on sale in select international markets. To be slotted above the XUV500, the new Y400 will come as a replacement for the first-gen SsangYong Rexton. With local assembling, Mahindra is aiming at an aggressive pricing for this SUV. We believe that the SUV will be around 3-4 lakh cheaper than its direct rival Toyota Fortuner. A better price tag will give it a competitive advantage over other models in its category.

The Mahindra Y400 was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2018. In fact, the company has already displayed this SUV to public at its annual general meeting in Mumbai. While the overall profile is similar to the global Rexton, Mahindra has made some changes to the front design to offer a family look. The SUV features a new vertically-slated grille and slightly modified bumpers. The side cladding has also been added to give a more rugged feel. Adding to it, the suspension setup has also been tweaked to suit Indian road conditions,

It comes equipped with premium brown Nappa leather upholstery, a 9.2-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, climate control and a 7.0-inch LCD instrument console. In terms of proportions, the new Mahindra Y400 is longer and wider than the Fortuner. In fact, the wheelbase is also more than the segment-leader, which ensures loads of space inside the cabin. Dimensionally, the Mahindra XUV700 is 4,850mm, 1,920mm and 1,800mm in length, width and height respectively. The SUV has a wheelbase of 2,850mm, while the ground clearance stands at 220mm.

Powering the SUV is a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine that churns out a maximum power output of 187hp and 420Nm of peak torque. Both 2 and 4-wheel-drive options will be on offer. A 7-speed torque convertor automatic unit will come as standard.
