These small cars are also high on fuel efficiency making them more desirable among buyers. Here’s a brief on the top 5 most fuel efficient premium hatchbacks of the country.

The third-generation Hyundai i20 comes with two petrol and one diesel engine options. Its 100bhp, 1.5L, 4-cylinder diesel motor has been paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The oil burner promises a fuel economy of 25.2kmpl. The model lineup includes 4 diesel variants, which are priced from Rs 8.21 lakh – Rs 10.76 lakh (ex-showroom). The Asta (O) diesel is the top-selling variant of the i20. Just so you know, the Hyundai i20 received a generation in November 2020. The hatchback comes with an all-new design and more feature-laden interior.

The Tata Altroz is the second most fuel efficient premium hatchback in the country. The hatchback’s diesel version uses a 90bhp, 1.5L, 4-cylinder turbo motor mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The carmaker claims that the Altroz diesel delivers a mileage of 25.11kmpl. There are 7 diesel manual variants priced between Rs 6.99 lakh – Rs 9.55 lakh (ex-showroom).

Engine setup of the Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza includes a 1.2L K12B petrol and a 1.2K K12C Dualjet petrol with the Smart Hybrid system. The Dualjet Smart Hybrid motor is slightly more powerful and fuel economical than the K12B gasoline unit. While the former delivers power worth 90bhp and mileage of 23.87kmpl, the latter one offers 84bhp and 21.01kmpl of fuel efficiency. While the Glanza G Smart Hybrid model costs Rs 7.99 lakh, the Baleno Delta and Zeta Dualjet manual variants are available at Rs 7.59 lakh and Rs 8.22 lakh respectively.

Volkswagen claims that the Polo hatchback’s 1.0L TSI motor offers an impressive mileage of 18.24kmpl, thus making it India’s fourth most fuel efficient premium hatchback. The Polo 1.0L TSI Highline Plus variant costs Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom).

Honda Jazz CVT – 17.1Kmpl

The Honda Jazz comes powered by a 1.2L, 4-cylinder petrol engine that’s good enough for 90bhp and 110Nm of torque. The premium hatchback can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. While its manual version returns a claimed mileage of 16.6kmpl, the CVT automatic model offers 17.1kmpl.
