Scheduled be launched in 2020-21, the India-spec new Volkswagen T-Cross compact SUV will be based on VW Group’s MQB AO IN Platform

German premium carmaker, Volkswagen will soon unveil the long-awaited new VW T-Cross compact SUV in the European markets. VW Group has recently announced to develop a new SUV for the Indian market, which is scheduled to be arrived in 2020. According to the Automotive News Canada, Volkswagen T-Cross compact SUV will also go on sale in the Indian market.

Speaking to Automotive news, Andreas Kruegar, VW brand small car product line head, said, “We’re going worldwide with this, starting in Europe, then South America, both Chinese joint ventures and finally India,”.

The new Volkswagen T-Cross compact SUV is based on VW Group’s MQB AO platform that also underpins the new-generation Polo. However, the India-spec model will use the upcoming MQB AO IN platform. This platform is being developed by Skoda and the T-Cross based compact SUV will be the first model to be based on this platform. The new VW T-Cross is expected to arrive in India in 2020-21. This model will directly rival the Hyundai Creta and others in its category. The European-spec model is 4.10 meter long; however, the Chinese-spec model will be longer and spacious. It is expected that the longer version of the SUV will arrive in India. The European-spec VW T-Cross will come with two petrol engine options – 1.0-litre TSI petrol and 1.5-litre TSI. While the former offers two states of tunes – 95bhp and 115bhp, the 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 150bhp. Few markets will also receive a 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine. The India-spec model will also use a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine, which VW confirmed that to be locally developed. There will be no diesel version on offer. VW will phase out the 1.5-litre TDI unit, which is not likely to meet stringent BSVI norms.

Volkswagen Group has recently confirmed that it will launch 2 new products in India by 2021. The first one will be a compact SUV, possibly the T-Cross, followed by the next-generation VW Vento. The new VW T-Cross for Indian market is expected to be priced somewhere between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 16 lakh.
