A Bomb From World War II Found In Volkswagen’s Wolfburg Facility

Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg facility in Germany has a history with the Second World War. And thus the news of explosives being found in the VW factory isn’t shocking.  It was only a couple of years ago, a bomb was located there. The potentially unexploded bomb was defused during lunch time on Sunday (i.e. 8th July, 2018). As a precaution, the officials evacuated 4,000 people within a 1 kilometer radius of the plant’s surrounding area. The operation caused temporary closure of a major railway line and a canal running past the sprawling Volkswagen’s headquarters.

The cornerstone ceremony of Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg-based plant took place in the presence of Adolf Hitler and several high-ranking political representatives in May 26, 1938. The first vehicle built in the Volkswagenwerk called ‘KdF-Wagen” which means “Strength through Joy”.

The Second World War broke out in September, 1939. Interestingly, VW continued its facility operation during the war even when the roof of the plant got many bombing holes. It served as production hub for the Jeep-style military vehicles along with the repair house for the warplanes and aircraft supplies. The persistent operations resulted air raids from the allies.
