The new Volkswagen T-Cross compact SUV is based on MQB A0 platform that also underpins the new Polo.

German premium carmaker, Volkswagen is betting big on SUVs to increase global sales. After introducing the new Tiguan, Atlas, T-ROC and Touareg, VW is all set to launch its smallest SUV – T-Cross – in the international markets. This model is also speculated to arrive in India by 2020, but with slightly revised styling and underpinnings. Here we bring you 5 facts you should know about the upcoming VW T-Cross Compact SUV.

It is VW Polo with a crossover body –

The T-Cross compact SUV is based on the new-gen Polo hatchback. Not just platform, the vehicle also shares several design elements and exterior features with the sibling hatch. While the T-ROC comes with a crossover-ish profile, the VW T-Cross gets more conventional rugged SUV look. Interior is no different

VW is yet to release the interior images of the SUV. Going by the component sharing method adopted by many automakers including VW, we are safe to assume that the T-Cross cabin will have similar design and features offered in the new-gen Volkswagen Polo. It is expected to come with multiple colour options for the dashboard and center tunnel. All-digital display will be offered on the top-spec model, while a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity could come as standard fitment.

Multiple engines to be on offer

The new model will come with a range of engine options, ranging from 1.0-litre TSI petrol to the range-topping 1.8-litre turbocharged unit. The entry-level motor produces 108bhp of power. Other engine options will include a 1.4-litre TSI and 1.8-litre TSI producing 147bhp and 189bhp respectively. A front-wheel drive layout will be offered as standard, while the top-spec models could receive VW’s trademark 4Motion AWD system.

India-Spec Model to use MQB AO IN platform

While the global spec model is based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB AO platform that also underpins the new Polo. In India, Skoda is developing a low-cost platform called MQB AO IN. Competition

In the global markets, the VW T-Cross will be positioned against the likes of Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR. On the flip side, the compact SUV will come as an affordable model in our country. In India, it will directly challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and the upcoming Nissan Kicks.
