Volkswagen, German premium carmaker seems aggressive with its SUV strategy for the global markets. In the past 2 years, the company had launched a range of new SUVs including new Tiguan, T-ROC and Tiguan Allspace in the global markets. Interestingly, the company is also working on an all-new mid-sized SUV that will be slotted between the Tiguan and the upcoming India-bound T-Cross compact SUV. Codenamed ‘Volks-SUV’ or ‘people’s SUV’, the new SUV will first make its debut in China in August 2018.
The new Volks-SUV will be based on Volkswagen’s versatile MQB platform that also underpins the Skoda Karoq and Seat Ateca. Skoda will launch the Karoq SUV in India by the end of this year or early 2019. It is expected that Volkswagen could also introduce this SUV in India to challenge the likes of Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson.
This will be the brand’s first product developed Volkswagen’s Chinese subsidiary for the global markets except Europe. In Europe, German automaker is already selling the T-ROC mid-sized SUV. The VW T-ROC is slightly smaller than the Skoda Karoq and the Seat Ateca. While the T-ROC comes with a swooping roofline and crossover-ish design, the new Volks-SUV will have a muscular and butch exterior design with tradition SUV-like profile. For Indian market, Volkswagen Group is working on a low-cost MQB platform to spawn its future cars. The company will launch a compact SUV in 2020, based on T-Cross, to challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster. Adding to it, the company will launch the new gen Polo and Vento in the country in near future.
