December 17, 2016 – Volkswagen, the German auto major, has begun the production of the VW Atlas in the USA in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Volkswagen Atlas is the seven-seater version of the Tiguan that will be sold as the VW Teramont in the Chinese market. This premium SUV will might also be launched in the Russia and other Middle East countries. However, its India launch still under the question.
Based on the MQB platform, the Volkswagen Atlas was first previewed on the Santa Monica Pier at the end of the historic Route 66. The Volkswagen Atlas 7 Seater SUV will be positioned between the Tiguan and the Touareg. In terms of design, the SUV looks largely identical to the formers featuring clean lines and a sporty design. The Volkswagen Atlas features a new grille layout that seems inspired from the Tiguan. The car also gets LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps as standard. What add more to its premium appearance are optional LED taillights, sculpted bonnet, panoramic sunroof, muscular wheel arches, a sloping roof with roof rails, rear spoiler, chunkier rear overhang and bigger rear doors for easy access to third row of seats. As far as dimensions are concerned, the Volkswagen Atlas measures 5,037mm in length, 1,979mm in width and 1,768mm in height. This makes it longer than the Skoda Kodiaq. It is 52mm longer, 159mm wider and 64mm taller than the Tiguan SUV as well. Inside the cabin, the Volkswagen Atlas 7 seater SUV offers enough space for seven adult passengers. The foldable third row can create extra luggage space.
The VW Atlas also gets an optional Active Info Display (Volkswagen Digital Cockpit) that allows driver to configure the display. Features such as automatic climate control, touchscreen infotainment system, heated steering, leather seats, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link, and Fender premium audio system that has 12 speakers and a 480 Watt Fender Premium audio system are also on offer. With respect to safety and security, the Volkswagen Atlas gets adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert and park assist, and an automatic post-collision braking system, multiple airbags, etc.
For the American market, the Volkswagen Atlas will be made available with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder TSI petrol and a 3.6-litre VR6 petrol engine. While the former churns out a peak power of 234bhp, the latter delivers 276bhp. Both engines will be paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 3.6-litre VR6 version will also get the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system offering four drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sport and Custom.
