Tata Motors seems aggressive with its product strategy for the Indian market. Buoyed by positive response for Tiago and Nexon, Tata is now aiming to enter into premium car segment. The company will launch two premium SUVs based on H5X concept and 45X concept based premium hatchback and a mid-sized sedan in the next 2 years. Tata Motors had showcased the H5X and 45X concepts at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo out of which, the H5X based SUV will first go on sale in the market. This exciting looking product previews the company’s future design direction for SUVs. Here are 5 things you should know about the new Tata H5X premium SUV.
Land Rover’s Platform (OMEGA)
Tata Motors’ new SUV will be the company’s first product to be based on the Land Rover’s platform. Built on Discovery Sport platform, the new SUV will come in two seating layouts – 5 and 7. The new platform has been modified to achieve higher level of localisation and is called ‘Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced’ (OMEGA) architecture. Tata has confirmed that future products above 4.3 meter in length will use this platform.
2.0L Diesel Engine
The new H5X SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, which is sourced from Fiat. This engine offers two states of tunes – 148bhp/350Nm and 170bhp/350Nm. Former will be offered with the H5X five-seater model, while the more powerful unit will power the 7-seater H7X. This model is expected to get a ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic gearbox. Features like AWD system with Land Rover’s Terrain Response system and all-independent suspension system could be sourced from the Land Rover Discovery Sport. New Impact 2.0 Design Philosophy
The Tata H5X will be the first product to feature the company’s new IMPACT 2.0 Design language. The company claims that the production-spec model will carry over 80% of the concept design, which has aggressive and bold face. Upfront is a high-mounted LED headlamps and a more prominent 3-dimensional ‘Humanity Line’ that underlines the headlamps and front grille, tri-arrow pattern fog lamps, chunky clamshell-like hood and large air vents. While the concept was equipped with 22-inch wheels, the production-ready model will get smaller 19-inch wheels.

To Rival Jeep Compass
The concept model measures over 4.5 meter in length, which makes it bigger than the Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass. With premium interior, powerful engine and bold design, Tata H5X five-seater model will rival a range of cars. However, it will mainly target Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. Launch Soon
At the time of unveiling, Tata Motors’ officials confirmed that the SUV will go on sale in early 2019. We believe that the SUV could be launched in the second quarter of 2019.
