Post BS6 emission norms, the price gap between petrol and diesel cars could go up to Rs 2.5 lakh

It is no secret that Maruti Suzuki is working on a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which will replace the existing 1.3-litre MJD diesel engine. The existing engine will be phased out post April 1, 2020 and Maruti will need a new diesel engine to continue sales of its diesel powered cars. For people not in the know, BSVI emission norms will come into effect from April 2020. Moreover, sales of BS4 compliant vehicles will also be banned in the market.

Upgrading diesel engine in accordance with new BSVI emission norms will further widen the gap between petrol and diesel car prices. The current gap between petrol and diesel cars is 1 lakh. With BSVI engines, the gap could go up to Rs 2.5 lakh. In fact, the diesel powered model prices could increase by up to Rs 2 lakh. Maruti officials have already confirmed that the company will start rolling our BSVI compliant models from January 2020, which is 4 months prior to the deadline. The amount of work and technology need to upgrade diesel engines to BSVI emission norms will be much higher compared to the one with petrol engines. This will result into sharp increase in the prices of diesel driven models in India. Besides SHVS mild-hybrid systems, Maruti Suzuki is also considering strong hybrids to reduce the impact of sharp rise in diesel car prices post April 2020. Media reports claim that Maruti is working on increasing the local components for its hybrid technology. In order to combat the upcoming rise in diesel car prices, Maruti Suzuki could opt for CNG option for its small cars.
