MG India SUV (1)

Scheduled to be launched in first half of 2019, MG Motor’s first SUV for India will come in two seating layouts – 5 and 7.

Speculations were on rife that MG Motor will launch Hyundai Creta rival in India. However, we can confirm you that the first MG product will be a C-segment SUV to challenge the likes of Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. The new model will be longer than the Honda CR-V, though heavy localisation will help the automaker to price this model aggressively. It will be launched in the first half of 2019, which will be followed by a pure-electric SUV.

The new SUV is most likely to come in two seating arrangements – 5 and 7-seater. It will be a made-for-India product, which is designed by MG UK design centre. The SUV will be produced at the brand’s new Halol based plant. It is likely to be priced under Rs 20 lakh, which will put it straight against the Hyundai Tucson. The new SUV is expected to arrive in both petrol and diesel guise. The gasoline version is most likely to receive a new 1.5-litre direct injection petrol engine, which also powers some of the Baojun products in China. This engine produces over 160bhp of power. On the flip side, the diesel version could receive Fiat’s 2.0-litre Multi-Jet engine that is good for 173bhp and 350Nm of torque. Also See – India-Bound MG HS Premium SUV Unveiled

The SUV’s interior will be designed keeping Indian buyers taste in mind. Expect premium cabin, soft touch materials on dashboard and door panels and leather-seats on top-spec model. It will get a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, dual-zone automatic climate control and panoramic sunroof. Multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, traction control, hill launch assist, etc could be offered as optional.
