Maruti Suzuki had announced that it will cease the production of diesel cars post BSVI emission norms kicks in April 2020. The company currently has 2 diesel engines – a 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced MJD and the in-house developed 1.5-litre. The Fiat-sourced engine is confirmed to be phased out, while the 1.5L engine production will be ceased for some time.

Speaking to ET Auto, a source close to development said that the carmaker has assured its dealer partners that they may bring back diesel cars if demand exists. Maruti Suzuki believes that the price gap between the petrol and diesel cars can go up to Rs 2 lakh post BSVI emission norms. However, the company will see the consumer reaction and then will decide on diesel cars for India.

Maruti Suzuki certainly considering larger BSVI compliant diesel engines for the market; however, all depends on the demand post BS6 emission norms. The company believes that the acquisition cost of diesel cars will be higher, and the demand for small diesel cars will further go down in near future.

The Indo-Japanese brand also expects a significant growth in CNG-powered cars in India. Maruti Suzuki is also readying the petrol versions of the S-Cross and the Vitara Brezza. The petrol-powered models will be launched before the end of this year, most probably around November-December.

The company is gearing up for the launch of the much-awaited S-Presso mini SUV. Scheduled to be launched on September 30, 2019, the Maruti S-Presso will be the first model to get the BSVI compliant 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine. This engine will also power the Maruti Celerio, Alto K10 and the Maruti Wagon R.
