Maruti Suzuki is considering the electric derivative of the Suzuki Ertiga MPV

The new-generation Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has been receiving excellent response from car buyers. The Indo-Japanese maker is focusing on electric vehicles and the first model based on the new Wagon R will arrive in late 2019 or early 2020. If media report is to be believed, Maruti Suzuki is considering the electric derivative of the Suzuki Ertiga MPV.

Maruti will be introducing the JDM-spec Wagon R electric vehicle, which is currently under testing. The new Ertiga will be the part of Maruti-Toyota alliance’s plans of introducing electric vehicles. Adding to it, the electric model could carry a different nameplate. The Indo-Japanese brand is likely to use India as a global production hub for the electric vehicles in the near future. The company is also planning to make huge investment into Lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Gujarat.

The report claims that Suzuki engineers had shortlisted Ertiga and the Ciaz for the electrification plant, but decided to go with the seven-seater MPV. The Ciaz sedan will require huge changes to incorporate electric drivetrain. Additionally, the Ertiga MPV is hugely popular among private as well as commercial buyers. Maruti Suzuki will soon introduce the sportier version of the Ertiga MPV. Scheduled to be launched in August, the Ertiga Cross will be sold exclusively through NEXA premium dealership network. It will be a 6-seater model with captain seats for all 3 rows. The Cross model will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines.
