The Kia Trazor compact SUV will go on sale in India early next year.

Kia Motors is ready to enter India by early next year with an all-new compact SUV based on the SP concept that was previewed at the 2018 Auto Expo. To name its first vehicle for India, the Korean carmaker conducted an online poll and majority of votes came for the Kia Trazor followed by the Tusker, SP-Z and Trailster.

With an investment of $1.1 billion, Kia has established its manufacturing facility in Yerramanchi village of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. The Kia Trazor will be a 5-seater premium SUV sharing its platform and features with the new-generation Hyundai Creta. Interestingly, it will go up against its donor cousin sibling along with the upcoming Nissan Kicks.

Kia Trazor Launch Date

As mentioned above, Kia will commence its Indian operations with the SP concept based compact SUV – Trazor. Production of the vehicle is reported to be underway at the company’s Anantapur-based plant that has annual production capacity of 3,00,000 units. The carmaker confirmed that its first product will hit Indian roads in the second half of 2019. Though, the media reports suggest that the company has fast tracked its operations and is planning to launch the Kia Trazor in April, 2019. Kia Trazor Price In India

In the premium 5-seater SUV space, the new Kia Trazor will compete against the Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and Renault Captur. With feature-laden cabin and efficient powertrains, Kia’s first SUV is likely to be slightly more expensive than its competition. Prices of the vehicle are estimated to start from Rs 11 lakh for the base variant and go up to Rs 17 lakh for the range-topping trim (ex-showroom).

Kia’s first model for India is likely to come with a range of diesel and petrol engines, borrowed from the Hyundai Creta. The latter one is currently available with three powertrains – a 1.4L U2 CRDI diesel, 1.6L U2 CRDi diesel and 1.6L Gamma petrol. The small capacity oil burner delivers 89bhp with 220Nm of torque, and the bigger capacity motor makes 126bhp with 259Nm of torque. The gasoline unit, on the other hand, is good enough for 121bhp and 151Nm of torque. Kia might also offer a 1.4L petrol engine on the Trazor carline. Official engine details of the new Kia compact SUV are yet to be revealed. Speculations suggest that it might borrow powertrains from the Hyundai Creta. If this happens, the Trazor will be as fuel efficient as the Creta that returns mileage of 22.1kmpl – 17.6kmpl (diesel) and 15.8kmpl-14.8kmpl (petrol).

Most of the design and styling bits of the production-ready Kia Trazor are likely to be carried over from the SP concept. Though, it will receive some practical changes. Upfront, the compact SUV will feature Kia’s signature Tiger nose grille, sleek and edgy headlamps sculpted bonnet and sporty bumper. Styling elements such as prominent wheel arches with large multi-spoke alloy wheels, tapered down roofline, flush door handles, greenhouse areas and sleep ORVMs enhance its side appearance. The rear profile features SUVesque skid plate design on the bumper and wraparound taillamps with Sportage-inspired design.

Interior details of the new Kia SUV are not available. Similar to the exterior design, the cabin might also stay close to its concept. With respect to safety, the Kia Trazor is likely to be loaded with a range of advanced active and passive safety fitments. All variants might get airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assist as standard equipment.
