In coming years, the Indian automobile industry will see some major changes right from shift to electric mobility to autonomous and advanced technologies. Car manufacturers have already lined-up several new products across different segments. Besides new launches, the popular vehicles will get mid-life updates and generation change. Here’s a brief on India’s top 5 SUVs that will enter into new-generation in the next couple of years.
Maruti Vitara Brezza
If reports are to be believed, the new-generation Maruti Vitara Brezza will hit roads in February 2022. The subcompact SUV is expected to come with improved design and advanced connectivity features and comfort goodies. As of now, details are scanty. Speculations are on rife that the 2022 Maruti Vitara Brezza could get 1.5L, 4-cylinder K15B naturally aspirated petrol engine with the stronger hybrid technology. The existing 4-speed automatic gearbox might also be replaced with the new 6-speed automatic unit. This time around, the compact SUV could be offered with the factory-fitted sunroof and wireless charging pad.
Mahindra Scorpio
Mahindra & Mahindra has already confirmed that the new-generation Scorpio will arrive in the first quarter of 2022. The SUV will witness comprehensive changes in terms of design and features along with a set of more powerful engines. The 2022 Mahindra Scorpio will be offered with the 155bhp, 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol engines with both manual and automatic gearbox options. The RWD will continue to be on offer. The SUV will be designed on the modified ladder frame chassis that also underpins the new Thar.
Toyota Fortuner
The new-generation Toyota Fortuner, which is currently in its testing phase, will hit showrooms sometime in 2022. Major changes are likely to be made to its exterior and interior. It’s reported to come with the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) along with the vehicle stability control, electric power steering and new connected car features. On the engine front, the 2022 Toyota Fortuner (global-spec) will get diesel hybrid powertrain. In India, it could be offered with the same 204bhp, 2.8L diesel and 166bhp, 2.7L petrol engine options.
Tata Nexon
Tata’s top-selling Nexon subcompact SUV will enter into its new-generation in the next 2 years. Its official launch timeline is yet to be revealed. The new-gen Tata Nexon is expected to receive significant changes in terms of design and features. In fact, the subcompact SUV will underpin the Alfa platform that’s already used in the Altroz hatchback and Punch micro SUV. The same architecture will be used in the new-generation Tiago and Tigor. Under the hood, the Nexon might continue to feature the 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.5L turbo diesel engines.
Mahindra Bolero
The home-grown carmaker has confirmed that the Bolero will get a generation change in the next five years. It’s likely to arrive by 2024. As of now, details are not available. Though, we expected it to come with the all-new design along with the more up-market interior and refined engine setup. At present, the SUV comes in three variants powered by 1.5L diesel engine that’s good enough for 75bhp and 210Nm. Transmission duties are done by a 5-speed manual gearbox.
