Volkswagen has finally launched the long-awaited Taigun mid-sized SUV in the Indian market. The Made-in-India SUV is positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Skoda Kushaq. – The VW Taigun is offered in petrol version only. It is available in 4 trim levels – Comfortline, Highline, Topline and GT Line – priced between Rs 10.50 lakh and Rs 17.50 lakh.
– The Skoda Kushsaq is offered in 3 trim levels – Active, Ambition and Style – priced between Rs 10.49 lakh and Rs 17.59 lakh.
– The Creta petrol range starts at Rs 10.16 lakh and goes up to Rs 17.87 lakh. On the other hand, the Kia Seltos petrol version is priced at Rs 9.95 lakh for the entry-level variant and Rs 17.79 lakh for the top-spec model.
– It is clear that the prices of all these four models are in similar range. However, Hyundai and Kia offers more variants and gearbox options with the Creta and the Seltos respectively.

– Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun are based on the same platform, called the MQB A0 IN. Not just platform, both models share the engine and gearbox options. Engine optons include a 1.0L TSI 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.5L TSI EVO 4-cylinder petrol. While the former is good for 115PS and 175Nm of torque, the later produces 150PS of power and 250Nm of torque.
– Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual as standard, a 6-speed torque convertor automatic for the 1.0L variants, and a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox reserved for the 1.5L petrol powered models only.
– Similarly, Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos have the same set of engines – a 1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.4L turbocharged petrol. While the former is good for 113bhp and 144Nm of torque, the turbo unit offers 138bhp and 242Nm of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard, while a CVT automatic and a 7-speed DCT are offered with 1.5L and 1.4L petrol engines respectively.
– The Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5L variants are more powerful than the Creta and the Seltos turbo variants. Power figures of the 1.0L petrol engine is equivalent to its rivals – 1.5L naturally-aspirated. Adding to it, the 1.0L engine is more torquier than the 1.5L NA engine.
Mileage Comparison
– The Skoda Kushaq is claimed to return a fuel efficiency of 17.88kmpl with manual gearbox and 15.78kmpl with automatic gearbox.
– The Taigun 1.0L MT & AT claims to return 18.1kmpl and 16.44kmpl respectively. The Taigun 1.5L MT is claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 18.47kmpl. The DSG variant reports a minor drop in efficiency; however, it still offers an ARAI mileage of 17.88kmpl.
– The Hyundai Creta is claimed to return a fuel efficiency of 17kmpl, while the Seltos offers an ARAI certified mileage of 16.5kmpl.

– The Creta is around 89mm longer, 30mm wider and 25mm taller than the Kushaq and the Taigun. The Seltos is 94mm wider, 40mm wider and 8mm taller than the European cousins. However, the Taigun and the Kushaq offers 41mm longer wheelbase. The Korean siblings have 48L bigger boot space than the European counterparts.
– The VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq rides on segment-longest wheelbase of 2,651mm; however, both models have smaller dimensions than the Creta and the Seltos. In terms of proportions, the new Volkswagen Taigun is 4,221mm long, 1,760mm wide and 1,612mm tall. The SUV offers 385-litres of boot space, which can be increased upto 1,405-litres by folding down the rear seats. The Seltos also offers similar dimensions and boot space.
– While the Creta is 4300mm long, 1790mm wide and 1635mm tall, the Seltos measures 4315mm in length, 1800mm in width and 1620mm in height. Both models have a wheelbase of 2,610mm. Both Creta and Seltos offer a boot space of 433-litres.
