Big New Car Launches Next Week – Maruti, Mahindra, Tata

The second week of January 2023 is action-packed for the Indian automotive industry. Asia’s largest automotive show, the Delhi Auto Expo is all set to begin on 13th January at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida. The media day will be held on 11th and 12th January. Most car manufacturers have already revealed their plans for the mega event that includes multiple launches, new product and concept unveilings and technology display. There will be at least 9 major new car launches across segments right from SUVs, EVs to special editions. Here’re some key details of the upcoming new cars that will go on sale next week.

Mahindra Thar RWD

New Mahindra Thar Waiting Period

Mahindra & Mahindra will introduce more affordable, RWD (rear-wheel drive) variants of the Thar SUV. As per leaked information, the model lineup will receive the RWD system with a new 117bhp, 1.5L diesel and the existing 2.0L petrol engine. While the former will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox only, the latter will get both manual and automatic transmissions. MG Motor India will roll out the Hector and Hector Plus facelifts at the 2023 Auto Expo. Both SUVs receive a few cosmetic changes and feature upgrades. There will be a 14-inch HD portrait infotainment system with the Next-Generation i-Smart connectivity. It will offer over 50 connected features. The SUV also comes with the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), an updated infotainment driver display, ventilated seat button, a new start/stop button and a 360 degree camera with multiple options. Hyundai Ioniq 5 India Launch

Hyundai India will launch its flagship Ioniq 5 electric crossover on 11th January at the 2023 Auto Expo. Official bookings for the model have already been commenced at a token sum of Rs 1 lakh. Here, it will come as a CKD (completely knocked down) unit. Based on the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is expected to be offered with a 72.6kWh battery pack and RWD long-range variant. Tata Harrier special edition is likely to go on sale next week. The spy images suggest that the SUV’s limited edition has red accents on the front grille and brake callipers along with a special edition badging on the front fenders. Inside, the red leatherette seat upholstery, red coloured door handles and red and gloss black contrasting elements enhance its sporty appeal. Under the hood, the new Harrier special edition will employ the same 170bhp, 2.0L diesel engine with the manual and automatic gearbox options. More details here…

Maruti S-Presso Xtra Edition, which has been revealed via official images, might go on sale next week. The ‘Xtra’ edition accessory kit will be available at Maruti Suzuki’s authorized dealerships at some extra price. The model carries ‘Xtra’ badge, a front skid plate and cladding on wheel arch and doors. Similar to the standard version, it comes with 14-inch steel rims with the wheel caps. Toyota Kirloskar Motor is likely to announce price of the Hyryder CNG version at the 2023 Auto Expo. The company will also showcase the GR Corolla, hydrogen powered cars, EVs and PHEVs at the automotive event. Toyota’s CNG SUV can be pre-booked by paying a sum of Rs 25,000. The model will come with the 1.5L, K15C petrol engine and a factory-fitted CNG kit. In CNG mode, the setup will offer power worth 88bhp and 121.5Nm of torque. It will be available with a 5-speed manual gearbox only. The CNG SUV will offer a claimed mileage of 26.10km/kg. More details here…

Maruti Suzuki’s pavilion at the 2023 Auto Expo will be graced with 16 models including 3 all-new SUVs. The carmaker might also announce prices of the Grand Vitara CNG variant at the event. Similar to the Hyryder CNG, it will use the 103bhp, 1.5L K15C petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit. Transmission duties will be done by a 5-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra XUV400 EV

Mahindra’s first pure electric SUV – XUV400 – will be launched next week at the 2023 Auto Expo. It will be offered in Base, EP and EL trims and a 39.5kWh battery pack using state-of-the-art Li-ion cells. The carmaker claims that the electric SUV can achieve 0 to 100kmph in 8.3 seconds. The setup offers a maximum power of 148bhp and 310Nm of torque. The Mahindra XUV400 will promise a range of 456km on a single charge that’s longest-range in its segment. More details here…
