Continuing its dominance in the Indian passenger vehicle segment, leading auto giant, Maruti Suzuki India recorded robust sales in the month of May, with seven of its stellar models in the top 10 best-selling cars last month. The data from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reveal Maruti’s mini-hatchback, Alto retained pinnacle with 23,618 units opposed to 19,874 units in the same time last year.
On the second spot is Maruti’s B segment hatchback, Swift, that is gearing up for a generation change early next year. Much in demand, the second-generation Swift accounted for 16,532 units, witnessing rise in demand by 4,000 units in the same time last year when it sold 12,355 units.
One of the oldest models in MSI’s line-up, Maruti WagonR is among the most popular models in its space. The tallboy hatchback came third on the list with 15,471 units in May 2017. In the same month last year, WagonR chipped in 13,231 units.
On the fourth spot is the premium hatchback, Baleno with 14,629 unit. The hatchback is trailed by Hyundai’s top-selling model, Grand i10 with 12,984 units in May 2017 as against 12,055 units last year in the same time under review.
Out numbering UV giant, Mahindra on the back of its stellar subcompact SUV, Vitara Brezza Maruti has several new models up its sleeve that are likely to be launched within 2-3 years. Setting the cash registers ringing ever since its launch, Vitara Brezza roped in 12,375 units last month which is notably higher than 7,193 units in the corresponding period last year. Currently, the SUV is available only in diesel version, though MSI will soon add petrol engine to Brezza’s line-up. The seventh spot in the top 10 best-selling cars in May is occupied by Hyundai Elite i20 with 10,667 units.
Maruti’s third-generation Dzire with all new looks and better equipped cabin is raking in good bookings especially for the top-spec Z and V trims. The subcompact sedan is on the 8th position with 9,073 units in May 2017.
Another Model from Hyundai’s clan that made it to the list of top 10 best-selling cars in India in May 2017 is the Creta SUV. According to the data by SIAM, Hyundai Creta is on number 9 with 8,377 units. While Maruti’s Ertiga MPV with 7,121 units is the last on the list.
