The subcompact SUV segment in India, characterized by vehicles falling within the 3.8 to 4.0-meter length range, has witnessed remarkable growth, reflecting the enduring appeal of compact yet well-equipped automobiles among Indian consumers. Responding to this burgeoning market demand, several automobile manufacturers are introducing new models and updating existing ones in this segment. Over the next couple of years, Indian consumers can expect the arrival of at least seven new subcompact SUVs.
This exciting lineup includes the Toyota Taisor and an updated Kia Sonet, both set to launch in the coming months. Additionally, the Tata Punch EV is slated to make its debut before the end of 2023, while the updated Mahindra XUV300 is scheduled for a 2024 release. In the pipeline are the New-Gen Hyundai Venue, anticipated to hit the market in 2025, an MG Compact SUV based on the Baojun Yep (with the launch timeline yet to be announced), and a new Honda Compact SUV, for which information on its launch timeline is currently unavailable. Upcoming Compact SUVs in India
Toyota Taisor
Toyota Taisor, the anticipated moniker for the forthcoming Maruti Fronx-based compact crossover from Toyota, is poised to undergo several noticeable cosmetic alterations in line with the brand’s re-badged models. These enhancements will include Toyota’s signature grille, revised bumpers, and unique wheel designs. Inside, the Taisor is expected to feature fresh upholstery, distinctive inserts, and a potentially revised dashboard design. The top-tier trim of this subcompact SUV is anticipated to come generously equipped with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone connectivity, a heads-up display (HUD), a 360-degree camera, cruise control, and a comprehensive safety suite featuring six airbags. Powering this Toyota subcompact SUV will be the same 1.2-liter naturally aspirated and 1.0-liter Boosterjet petrol engines.
Updated Kia Sonet
Kia India is currently testing an updated version of the Sonet, expected to hit the market within the next two months. While the existing engine lineup is likely to remain intact, this subcompact SUV will benefit from subtle design and feature enhancements. In particular, higher trim levels of the Sonet may offer advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technology and a 360-degree camera. Additionally, the updated Sonet will introduce a new fully digital instrument cluster, dual-tone upholstery, a revised dashboard design, and updated climate control. The 2023 Kia Sonet facelift will continue to offer the 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-liter turbo diesel engines, along with the existing range of transmission choices.
Tata Punch EV
Tata Motors, following the launch of the updated Harrier and Safari, is preparing to introduce the Tata Punch EV. It’s one of the highly-anticipated new compact SUVs in the country. This electric micro SUV will be built on Tata’s Gen-2 EV platform, which is essentially a heavily modified Alfa architecture. Specific technical details about the model are yet to be disclosed, but it is likely to feature a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a liquid-cooled battery pack. Reports suggest that the Punch EV might be offered with two battery pack options and various charging solutions. In terms of design, the electric micro SUV will feature some distinctions from its internal combustion engine counterpart.
Updated Mahindra XUV300
The Mahindra XUV300 facelift, expected to be the first launch of 2024 from the Indian automaker, is currently in its testing phase and has been spotted numerous times. This updated subcompact SUV is set to receive significant changes both inside and out, with the inclusion of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technology being a noteworthy highlight. The updated XUV300 might also feature a large free-standing touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a wireless phone charger, a digital driver’s display, and ventilated front seats. New-Gen Hyundai Venue
The next-generation Hyundai Venue is one of the upcoming all-new subcompact SUVs in India. It will be produced at Hyundai’s new Talegaon facility, is expected to undergo comprehensive changes in design and features. MG Compact SUV
MG, while yet to officially confirm a new subcompact SUV for the Indian market, is reportedly considering an entry into this competitive segment. This model could be a re-badged version of the Baojun Yep compact electric SUV, based on the GSEV (Global Small Electric Vehicle) platform, which also underpins the MG Comet EV. The Yep boasts a compact 28.1kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery and an electric motor generating 68bhp, providing an impressive electric range of up to 303km on a full charge.
Honda Compact SUV
Media reports suggest that Honda Cars India may introduce a new subcompact SUV to fill the void left by the WR-V. While details about the upcoming model remain scarce, it is likely to be based on the new-generation Fit/Jazz platform, which is available in select global markets. On the engine front, the new Honda compact SUV could offer a range of powertrains, including 1.2-liter and 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engines, as well as a 1.0-liter turbo petrol motor with 120bhp and 175Nm of torque.
