Homegrown automaker, Tata Motors had launched the Harrier 5-seater premium SUV in the domestic market in January 2019. The company is now ready to launch the 7-seater version of the Harrier, called the Tata Gravitas. The new model was first previewed as the Buzzard SUV at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The company had showcased the production version of the Gravitas at the 2020 Auto Expo. This SUV will directly rival the Mahindra XUV500, which is one of the most successful 7-seater SUVs of India. Prices of the new Tata Gravitas will be revealed only at the time of the launch. The SUV will go on sale at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo, which is scheduled to commence from February 6, 2020. The SUV is expected to cost around Rs 80,000 to 1 lakh over the Harrier, which means it could be priced in the range of Rs 14 lakh – Rs 23 lakh. The BSVI compliant Mahindra XUV500 is available in 4 variants – W5, W7, W9 and W11 (O) – priced between Rs 13.20 lakh and Rs 17.70 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Gravitas will only be offered with a diesel powertrain; while the XUV500 is available in petrol and diesel fuel option. The Tata’s flagship SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which company called the Kryotec engine. This engine will be tuned to produce around 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed torque convertor automatic. On the flip side, the Mahindra XUV500 is available with a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine that is good for 155bhp and 320Nm of torque. The company has discontinued the petrol version of the XUV500 in the BSVI avatar. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. Mahindra is readying the next-gen XUV500, which is scheduled to be launched in early 2021. The new model will receive new 2.0L turbocharged diesel and petrol engines. In comparison with XUV500, the Gravitas will offer around 15bhp more power and 30Nm higher torque

The Gravitas comes with a stretched body, which makes it 62mm longer than the Harrier 5-seater. It measures 4,661mm in length, 1,894mm in width and 1,786mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,741mm. It is significantly longer than the XUV500, which is 4,585mm long, 1,890mm wide and 1,785mm tall. In fact, the wheelbase of Gravitas is around 41mm longer than the XUV500. The Gravitas is 74mm longer and 4mm wider than the XUV500.

The Gravitas has a clear advantage over the XUV500 in terms of interior feel and features; however, Mahindra is readying the next-gen XUV500 with improved cabin and high-end features. The Gravitas is equipped with a semi-digital instrument console, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, two-tone temperature control, factory-fitted panoramic sunroof, leather seats, LED DRLs, electrically adjustable front seats, traction control and multiple airbags.

On the other side, the Mahindra XUV500 comes equipped with tan coloured seats with diamond stitching, leather wrapped steering and dashboard with silver trim, twin-pod instrument console, electronic stability control, dynamic steering control, Hill start and descent control, larger cooled under-arm storage space, a sunroof, conversation mirror, tyre tropics, etc. It comes equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
