Morris Garages (MG) is planning expand its electric vehicle lineup in the Indian market. The British carmaker introduced its first electric car – MG ZS EV – early this year. Speaking to an online media publication, Gaurav Gupta, Chief Commercial Officer, MG Motor India, has revealed that the company is considering a “cost-effective EV” that will be priced under Rs 10 lakh. With an investment of over Rs 5,000 crore, the company aims to setup a battery assembly plant in the country. This will help MG price its electric vehicles more competitively. The British carmaker has already partnered with eChrargeBays to install AC and 50kW DC chargers at customers’ homes/workplaces and MG dealerships respectively.
Currently, the MG dealerships with charging facilities are available across five select cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Hyderabad. MG Motor India is also setting up AC fast charging stations on key routes in select satellite cities to provide charge-on-the-go facility under its Roadside Assistance Services.
Talking about MG ZS EV, the electric SUV registered total sales over 400 units before lockdown and gathered over 3,000 bookings. MG aims to retail up to 3,000 – 4,000 units of the ZS EV by the end of 2020. Powertrain system of the SUV includes a 44.5kWh liquid-cooled battery pack with a 143bhp, electric motor. It promises an electric range of 340km on a single charge. The SUV comes with a single-speed automatic gearbox and FWD (front-wheel-drive) system.
The MG ZS EV can accelerate 0 to 100kmph in just 8.5 seconds. It has three driving modes and three level of regenerative braking. One can charge its battery up to 80% in 50 minutes by using a 50kW DC fast charger and around 6-8 hours by using a 7.4kW AC home charger.
