March 2018 was a mixed bag for most automakers in India. While Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors registered a growth of 15% and 31%, Honda, Renault and Toyota witnessed drop of 28%, 37% and 9% respectively. Car manufacturers such as Hyundai, Mahindra and Ford saw minor improvement of 7%, 5% and 4% respectively.
Maruti Suzuki India continued to maintain its dominance in the passenger vehicle segment with a total sales of 1.47 lakh units against 1.27 units in the same month last year. Regaining its top position, the Maruti Alto emerged as India’s best-selling car in March, 2018. The company sold 23303 units of the hatchback opposed to 18868 units in March, 2017. The new-generation Dzire that outsold the Alto in January and February 2018, has slipped down to the second rank with 22195 units of sales. The third, fourth and fifth spots are grabbed by the new Swift, Baleno and Wagon R respectively.
The new Elite i20 facelift is the best-selling car from the South Korean carmaker in India. Positioned sixth, the hatchback clocked a total sales of 13319 units against 12394 units in the same month previous year. While the Maruti Vitara Brezza compact SUV hold the seventh spot, the Hyundai Grand i10 hatchback and Creta premium SUV stood at eighth and ninth positions respectively.
Interestingly, Mahindra Bolero made its re-entry in the list of top 10 selling cars of the country. The carmaker managed to sell 9104 units accounting a growth of 5%. In March 2017, the home-grown carmaker sold 8681 units of the SUV.
