Toyota has revealed the rugged version of the Yaris hatchback for the South African market. Called the Toyota Yaris Cross, this new variant gets styling add-ons on the regular hatchback model. The crossover shares its engine mechanism with the India-spec Yaris sedan that was recently unveiled at the Auto Expo 2018.
In the South Africa, the Toyota Yaris Cross has been made available at R2,68,500 (around Rs 14.77 lakh). As of now, the Japanese carmaker has no plan to bring in the crossover in the Indian market. If it makes its way here, the Yaris Cross will be positioned against the Hyundai i20 Active.

Powering the Toyota Yaris Cross is the naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre, four-cylinder Dual VVT-i petrol engine making a top power of 107bhp (108PS)and 140Nm of torque. The same gasoline unit also powers the India-spec Yaris sedan. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic unit. Featuring crossover-ish stance, the Yaris Cross looks sportier than the regular Yaris hatchback. Some of its key highlights include LED daytime running lights, front and rear skid plate, black side and wheel arch mouldings, a black roof rails and over fenders. In terms of proportions, the crossover measures similar to the standard model. It measures 4,145mm in length, 1,730mm in width and 1,475mm in height and has a ground clearance of 135mm. Inside, the crossover gets an HD instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, leather seat upholstery, contrasting red stitching on the steering wheel and gear knob, automatic climate control, leather gearshift lever and knob and two additional speakers. Safety features such as a driver’s side knee airbag, side airbags and curtain airbags are exclusively offered on the top-end trim.
