Upcoming Electric Cars Under Rs 20 Lakhs – XUV400 to MG EV

1. Mahindra XUV400 (electric XUV300)

Mahindra is planning to launch 8 new electric SUVs before the end of 2027. The company will launch the electric version of the XUV300 before the end of 2023-24 financial year. It is reportedly to be called the Mahindra XUV400. The SUV was previewed as the eXUV300 concept at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is the first model based on Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture (MESMA) platform. The concept model was equipped with a 350V powertrain, which is expected to be joined by a more powerful 380V powertrain.

Expected Launch – 2023-24
Expected Price – Rs 14 lakh – Rs 18 lakh

2. Mahindra eKUV100

Mahindra eKUV100 Launch

Mahindra will soon launch the electric version of the KUV100 in the first half of 2022. The company had revealed the eKUV100 at the 2020 Auto Expo. It comes equipped with a 15.9kWh battery pack that powers an electric motor. The electric motor produces 54.4bhp (40kW) and 120Nm of torque. Using regular charger, the battery can be charged to 100% in 5 hr 45min. The battery can achieve 80% charging in 55min using a fast charger. The vehicle is claimed to offer a range of up to 150km; however, Mahindra is working on upgrading the battery to achieve higher range.

3. MG Electric Crossover

MG Motor has officially announced to launch an electric crossover, which will be priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh. Set to target masses, the new electric crossover will be based on a global platform but customised for the Indian market. The new model should offer an electric range of over 300kms. It will be positioned against the Tata Nexon EV.

4. Hyundai Venue Electric

Hyundai has officially announced to launch 6 new electric vehicles in the Indian market by 2028. It is reported that the company could use the existing models as base for new EVs. It is reported that the company will launch the electrified version of the Venue compact SUV, which will be positioned against the Tata Nexon EV. The upcoming Hyundai mass-market EV will be more affordable and offer range of around 350km.

5. Tata Altroz EV

Tata Altroz EV Specs

Tata Motors will launch the electric version of the Altroz hatchback in 2022. First unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the new EV is based on the  lightweight and modular Alfa (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) platform. Similar to the Nexon EV, the Tata Altroz EV will come with the brand’s latest Ziptron electric technology. The former comes with a permanent magnet AC motor powered by a Lithium-Ion battery, which is IP67 certified. The Nexon EV is equipped with 30.2 kWh battery pack delivering a range of over 312 km on a full charge.

6. Tata Punch EV

Tata Motors is also working on a new electric subcompact SUV, which is likely to be based on the Punch. This model is based on the ALFA modular platform that underpins the Altroz. The new Tata Punch is likely to share the powertrain with the new Tigor EV, which is fitted with a 55kW electric motor and a 26kW lithium-ion battery pack. This powertrain offers 74bhp (55kW) of power and 170Nm of torque. The Tigor EV is claimed to offer a certified range of 306kms. Expect similar range and power figures for the Tata Punch based electric SUV. The battery can be charged from 0 to 80% in less than 1 hour using a fast charger. With home charger, the battery can be charged in 8.5 hours.
