With an aim to promote safer vehicles in India, Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programe) introduced the #SaferCarsForIndia campaign in 2014. The project managed to make a profound impact on customers that eventually compelled manufacturers to produce safer cars. Here, we have outlined India’s top safest SUVs with 5-star Global NCAP rating.

Mahindra XUV700 was subjected to Global NCAP crash test in November 2021. The SUV scored 5 stars for adult occupant protection and four stars for child occupant protection with 16.03 points out of 17 and 41.66 out 49 points respectively. Its body shell and footwell area were rated as stable and ‘capable of withstanding further loadings’. The model tested by the safety watchdogs was equipped with dual airbags, Isofix child seat mounts, ABS and front seatbelt pretensioners.

Tata Punch is the brand’s third model to be awarded 5-star for adult occupant protection and 4 star for child occupant protection in Global NCAP. Interestingly, the subcompact scored 16.45 points out of 17 for adult occupants, which is highest score achieved by any car in the country. For child safety, the model secured 40.89 out of 49 points. The mini SUV comes with dual airbags, rear parking sensors, brake away control, EBD, ABS, high speed alert, Isofix child seat mounts and seatbelt reminder.

Mahindra XUV300 achieved 5 star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests. The Made-in-India SUV earned 16.42 points out of 17 and 37.44 points out of a 49 for adult and child occupant protection respectively. It’s structure and footwell were stable during the crash test. The standard safety kit of the XUV300 includes dual airbags, cornering brake control, ABS with EBD, front seatbelt reminder system, disc brakes for all four wheels, front seatbelt pretensioners and a passenger airbag deactivation switch.

Mahindra Thar – 53.64 Points/66

In Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia crash tests, the Mahindra Thar secured a four star safety rating. While the SUV’s bodyshell was stable and capable of “withstanding further loadings, its footwell area was rated unstable. The Thar gained 12.52 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection and 41.11 pints out of 49 for child occupant protection. The safety watchdogs also tested the SUV’s electronic stability program (ESP) that’s exclusively offered on the LX trim.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – 50.20 Points/66

Toyota’s Urban Cruiser subcompact SUV achieved 4 star rating for adult occupant protection and 3 stars for child occupant protection in the latest crash test rounds. It earned 13.52 points out of 17 and 36.68 points out of 49 for adult and child occupant protection respectively. The tested model was packed with safety features such as dual airbags, front seat belt pretensionsers, ABS and Isofix mounts.
