Suzuki ACross Could Be The Toyota RAV4 Based SUV

We informed you earlier that Suzuki and Toyota joined hands to help each other in developing new products and improving their positions globally. Suzuki is helping Toyota to expand its base in India and other developing nations. On the other hand, Suzuki is taking Toyota helps to expand its business in European and other global markets. The first model from Suzuki under the new JV will be introduced in the European markets this year.

A new media report claims that Toyota will introduce the electrified version of the RAV4 SUV in the European markets this year. This SUV will also be launched under the Suzuki nameplate and is likely to be called the Suzuki ACross. This will be followed by an all-new Suzuki model based on the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports.

The Suzuki ACross will be a re-badged version of the fifth-gen RAV4 hybrid that is currently on sale in Europe. It will be the Suzuki’s flagship model and will be positioned above the Vitara. The new model will continue to be based on the TNGA-K platform. Suzuki will made some design changes and feature upgrade to give the ACross a family look. There will be no changes to the engine specifications of the SUV.

The Toyota RAV4 is equipped with a 2.5-litre petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor that produces 65bhp/121Nm. The combination offers 218bhp of power and 221Nm of torque for the FWD model and 222bhp/221Nm for the AWD model. A single automatic gearbox unit will be offered as standard. The Suzuki ACross will be positioned against the likes of the Honda CR-V, Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Kodiaq and the Citroen C5 Aircross.

The second Suzuki-Toyota products will be based on the hybrid Corolla Touring Sports. The new model will share the mechanical bits and running gear from the Toyota’s model, while the biggest changes will be made to the design and interior. The Corolla Touring Sport hybrid version gets a 1.8L petrol engine or a 2.0L petrol engine paired to an electric motor. The total output from 1.8L hybrid unit is rated at 122bhp and 142Nm of torque, while the 2.0L hybrid offers a combined power output of 180bhp and 190Nm. A CVT automatic transmission is offered as standard.
