‘Made In India’ Skoda & Volkswagen SUVs India Launch Timeline Revealed

The Volkswagen Group officially confirmed that the first Made in India’ and ‘Made For India’ product will come by 2020.

Volkswagen has announced a total investment of €1 billion by 2020 to bring new platforms, technology and engines to the VW Group’s Indian manufacturing operations in Pune. Skoda is taking the lead to produce heavily localised MQB A0 IN platform along with production of new models for both VW and Skoda. The company will also be setting-up a new R&D centre at the Pune plant to conceive new products for India and like markets.

The Group officially confirmed that the first Made in India’ and ‘Made For India’ product will come by 2020. The first model will be a compact SUV, which will take on the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and the upcoming Jeep Renegade. The model will officially go on sale in the first half of 2021. It is expected that the new Skoda model will share design cues from the Skoda Vision X concept.

Volkswagen will also launch a compact SUV on the same platform, but this model will have different design. VW Group could also introduce new generation TSI or turbocharged petrol engines instead of oil burners. The MQB A0 IN platform can also accommodate alternate fuel options like CNG, mild-hybrid, series hybrid and full electric powertrains.

Besides compact SUVs, Volkswagen Group will also launch a compact sedan and a premium hatchback in India. Both VW and Skoda will have their own derivatives. While VW will introduce the next-gen Vento, Skoda will bring the next-gen Rapid. Adding to it, the premium hatchback could come as a replacement for the existing Polo hatchback. With these new products, VW Group is aiming at a 5 percent share in the highly competitive Indian car market. The company is targeting around 90% of all components and parts for the new models in India. Skoda team will also produce small displacement TSI petrol engines in India, including the new 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine that will also power the new SUV.
