We informed you earlier that Maruti Suzuki has started local assembly of the 3-Door Jimny mini off-roader at Gurgaon’s Plant. In fact, Suzuki has imported CKD kits of the mini off-roader, and plans to make India a production hub for the new Suzuki Jimny and will be exported to select international markets. The new model will be assembled at the Gurgaon based plant.
In fact, Maruti Suzuki has started road testing of the locally assembled Jimny SUV. While the 3-door model will be limited for the export markets, a 5-door Jimny is under development for the Indian market. Few media reports claim that the 5-door Maruti Jimny will be designed and developed on the Toyota Raize platform. This platform will also underpin a new mid-sized SUV, which is rumoured to be launched in 2022.
It is reported that Maruti Suzuki could launch the 3-door model as a CKD unit in India in 2021. The 5-door model won’t be ready in 2021 and is reportedly to be launched in 2022-23. The new model will be sold through Maruti Suzuki’s NEXA dealership network. It is reported that the Indo-Japanese brand is aiming to price the new model under Rs 10 lakh.
We believe that the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will use the long wheelbase and re-engineered version of the ladder-on-frame chassis to accommodate a longer body. The new model will directly rival the new Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha in the lifestyle SUV category. The company had showcased the 3-door model at the 2020 Auto Expo. The new-gen Suzuki Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that produces 100bhp of power and 130Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual or 4-speed torque convertor automatic. The 5-door model will be rear-wheel-drive and will come with a selectable four-wheel-drive system.
It is reported that the 5-door Jimny will have a commercial-oriented configuration for the Indian market. The 5-door version will offer more space practicality, which will make it a perfect for the Indian market. Similar to the 3-door model, the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will offer modern day features like automatic AC, touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, multi-functional steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat, etc. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, hill launch and descent assist, ESP and others will be offered as safety features.
