We reported earlier that the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will arrive in our market by 2022-23. A new media report suggests that the new 5-door variant of the Jimny will be co-developed with Toyota. The report also claims that the new SUV will be based on the Toyota Raize compact SUV.
The Toyota Raize compact SUV is based on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture), which is basically the low-cost version of the TNGA platform. This platform also underpins the Daihatsu Rocky compact SUV. Previous reports suggest that the India-spec Maruti Suzuki’s mid-sized SUV will also be based on the DNGA platform. It will take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and others in its category.
The report also claims that the 5-door Jimny will have a commercial-oriented configuration for the Indian market. The 5-door version will offer more space practicality, which will make it a perfect for the Indian market. The new model will directly rival the new-gen Mahindra Thar, which will also receive a 5-door variant in near future.
The 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny is likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that currently powers the Ciaz, the Vitara Brezza, the Ertiga and the S-Cross. This engine is capable of producing 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. The 5-door model will be rear-wheel-drive and will come with a selectable four-wheel-drive system.
Similar to the 3-door model, the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will offer modern day features like automatic AC, touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, multi-functional steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat, etc. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, hill launch and descent assist, ESP and others will be offered as safety features.
If latest reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki has started local assembling of the 3-door Jimny for the export markets. Maruti could introduce the 3-door model in India in 2021. The company will soon start producing the Jimny using locally-sourced components.
