Skoda, Volkswagen To Launch 1 New Car Every Six Months From 2021

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited is aiming to grab 3 per cent market share in the next couple of years. In order to achieve this target, the group will launch a new product in the country every six months, starting from early 2021. Under the India 2.0 strategy, Skoda and Volkswagen will launch new mid-sized SUVs in the first half of 2021.

Skoda and Volkswagen showcased the Vision IN SUV concept and the Taigun concept at the 2020 Auto Expo. While Skoda will launch the production version of the Vision IN, Volkswagen will introduce the production version of the Taigun SUV. These SUVs will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Nissan Kicks.

Skoda and Volkswagen will also introduce new mid-sized sedans in the second half of 2021 or early 2022. These new sedans will replace the ageing Skoda Rapid and the Volkswagen Vento. The Skoda Auto Volkswagen India PVT LTD has announced huge investment to achieve high localisation levels and expanding sales network and services. The group is developing a heavily localised MQB AO IN platform, which will underpin the upcoming SUVs and sedans. This will help the group to price the new models competitively.

The group is aiming to produce close to 2 lakh vehicles by 2022 to meet the local demand as well as for exports. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is also in talks with other manufacturers including MG Motors over a contract manufacturing partnership.

In terms of proportions, the new Vision IN is 4,256mm in length, 1,589mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,671mm.

The Skoda Vision IN based SUV and the Volkswagen Taigun will be powered by a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine that produces 148bhp and 250Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The new SUVs will also receive a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is good for 110bhp and 175Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
