BMW i8 with laser light

BMW has delivered the new i8 plug-in hybrid sports car to its first eight customers in Munich on June 5, 2014. It now become the world’s first car manufacturer to sell any car with laser powered headlights. These laser lights equipped BMW i8 sports cars were handed over to its first eight i8 customers. Roland Kruger, Head of Sales and Marketing Germany for the BMW Group, and Dr. Helmut Schramm, Head of Production Electric Vehicles at Plant Leipzig, presented the keys to the customers.

While high-intensity, energy-efficient full LED headlights are standard in the BMW i8, the optional laser-boost feature extends its high-beam range to up to 600 metres, doubling the already impressive illumination range of the latest LED high-beam headlights. This new technology consumes 30 per cent less energy than ultra-power-saving LED lights, takes up less installation space inside the headlight and weighs less.

The high beam lights are supported by a camera aided adaptive system which detects on-coming traffic and adjusts the range and direction of illumination. BMW will also launch the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car in the Indian market by the end of this year.
