Maruti Suzuki Baleno Vs Honda Jazz

Maruti Suzuki Baleno premium hatchback has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The vehicle has received over 40,000 bookings since its launch in October, 2015. The aggressive pricing, great handling and stunning design have worked in favor of the Maruti’s all-new premium hatchback.

The Baleno, along with the Maruti S-Cross, is retailed via the company’s NEXA premium dealerships. This premium hatch has been positioned above the Swift hatchback, and rivals the Hyundai Elite i20,Honda Jazz 2015 and Volkswagen Polo. Here is a spec-based comparison between the Baleno and the new Jazz.

New Maruti Baleno 2015 vs Honda Jazz – Engine Specifications

The new Baleno hatch shares engines with the Swift hatchback – i.e. a 1.2-litre VVT petrol and a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel. The petrol mill puts out a maximum power output of 84bhp at 6,000rpm and a peak torque of 115Nm at 4,000rpm, while the diesel unit is good for 73.9bhp of power at 4,000rpm and 190Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. Transmission options on offer are a 5-speed manual gearbox (standard) and a CVT automatic (only on the Delta petrol model).

On the other hand, the new Honda Jazz is available with a 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol and a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine options. The former delivers a maximum power of 90bhp along with 110Nm of torque, while the latter one offers 99bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. The petrol variants are offered with a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic transmission, while the diesel models get a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Clearly, Honda Jazz offers a lot more power than the Baleno hatchback, but when it comes to refinement, the Baleno’s 1.3L DDiS diesel engine is best-in-league. It offers impressive NVH levels. Unlike the Swift, the new premium hatchback does not feel underpowered.

Since both the cars come with CVT gearbox, the basic functioning will be similar. Though the Baleno, due to its light weight, will be much easier to drive.

The Baleno is an overall much better product than the Jazz. The Jazz, however, is more spacious.
