Fiat Mobi – A Perfect Entry-level Car For India

Fiat Mobi India

The Fiat Mobi has got everything to become an all-round package – style, power and tons of features. Only thing that Fiat will have to look after is the pricing.

Fiat introduced its entry-level hatchback – Fiat Mobi – in Brazil in April 2016 within the price range of R$ 31,900 – R$ 43,800. With sporty and SUV-ish styling, the Mobi is an instant hit in Brazil. Renault is also planning to launch the Kwid in the entry-level hatch segment in the South American country.

Though we haven’t heard anything from Fiat as of now, the SUV-ish hatchback – Mobi – surely looks quite a promising product. And with the success of the Renault Kwid in India, it makes even more sense for Fiat India to introduce Mobi here.

We tell you three reasons why Fiat Mobi makes a lot of sense for India

Fiat Mobi rear profile

Reason 1: Despite so much competition, there is a lot of scope for genuinely good products like Fiat Mobi

Indian buyers are spoiled with choices when it comes to small cars, but there is a still a lot of scope for genuinely goo products. The two new entries Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-GO took the market by storm with their aggressive pricing, contemporary looks and mechanical efficiencies. When all the major carmakers are making attempts to tap this growing market, Fiat India should also consider introducing the Mobi to India since it has all the attributes that made the Renault Kwid a hit. This new breed Fiat car has got everything to become an all-round package – style, power and tons of features. Only thing that Fiat will have to look after is the pricing.

Reason 2: Fiat Mobi has the SUV-ish stance – something that Indians love!

With bold stance and a high ground clearance, the Mobi looks quite SUV-ish. The car features large headlamp clusters, plastic frames around pronounced wheel arches, and boot-lid integrated tail lamps. While the base variant comes fitted with 14-inch steel wheels, the top-end model gets a pair of 14-inch alloys.

The Fiat hatchback measures 3,566mm in length, 1,633mm in width and 1,502mm in height. This makes it wider (53mm), taller (31mm) and more spacious than the Kwid. However, the ground clearance of the Mobi is slightly less (24mm) than the Kwid that stands 180mm tall from the ground. Renault’s hatchback offers the best-in-class boot space of 300-litres, whereas the Mobi offers 235-litres of luggage area.

Length 3,566mm
Width 1,633mm
Height 1,502mm
Ground Clearance 156mm
Boot Space 235-litres
Tyre Size 14-inch alloy wheels

Reason 3: Fiat Mobi will have the advantage over its rivals in spaciousness

The Mobi is one of the most feature-rich and affordable cars in its segment in Brazil. The Brazil-spec model comes with a host of comfort and safety features such as an instrument cluster with a digital display, a 4-inch infotainment system display with USB, Aux and Bluetooth connectivity, steering-mounted audio controls, drive-by-wire, dual airbags, ABS with EBD and many more.  With such a wide feature bridge, the Fiat Mobi could prove a potential threat to Kwid and redi-GO in India. Having said that, the company will have to give up on several of the aforementioned features to keep its prices affordable.

In the Brazilian market, the Fiat Mobi is available with a 1.0-litre, 4-cylinder flex-fuel engine that is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. While running on the petrol and ethanol, this powertrain generates a maximum power of 77bhp with 93Nm and 75bhp with 97Nm respectively. These power figures make it an efficient city machine. But to achieve the higher fuel efficiency, the company will have to tweak it a bit – a slightly less powerful engine too might work if the fuel efficiency is really high.
