Volkswagen readying a compact SUV to take on Honda WR-V, Vitara Brezza

The new Volkswagen SUV will debut in Brazil this year.

It is no secret that Volkswagen Group is readying a range of new cars for the Indian market. The first model will be launched under the Skoda nameplate and will be based on the Kamiq crossover. In fact, the Czech automaker has started working on the locally developed MQB AO IN platform. This platform will be used to develop at least 6 new cars for the Indian market. The first model will be launched in 2020, and a possible debut at the 2020 Auto Expo can’t be ignored.

Volkswagen will also launch a compact SUV, T-Cross based on the MQB AO IN in the Indian market. What’s interesting is that the German brand is also planning to introduce an all-new crossover on the new MQB AO platform in the Brazilian market. The new compact SUV will be based on the same platform that also underpins the Polo and will share the wheelbase with the latter as well. It is quite early to comment whether this small SUV will arrive in India or not; however, the rising demand for SUVs could allow Volkswagen to bring this mini SUV.

The rendered images of the compact SUV inspired by the Seat Arona have also been revealed on the internet. If it launch in India, the small SUV will challenge the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Honda WR-V. For people not in the know, Seat brand comes under the Volkswagen Group. Seat Arona is basically the low-cost version of the VW T-Cross. The new compact SUV will be positioned below the VW T-Cross and could also be launched in select growing markets.

The Seat Arona based on the affordable VW SUV will go on sale in the Brazilian market in the second half of 2019. This segment will be soon joined by the Hyundai Styx micro SUV, which is scheduled to make global debut at the 2019 New York Motor Show.
