We informed you earlier that Volkswagen Group will invest 800 crore in India. Skoda will have the responsibility to locally develop the MQB AO platform, which is reportedly to be called MQB AO IN. The company is not planning to enter the growing sub-4 meter SUV segment. VW will continue to play premium and will start its new journey with a premium B-SUV that will rival the Hyundai Creta.
Speaking to Moneycontrol, Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen India said, “As a logical step we are looking at the A0 SUV segment, which is one of the fastest growing segments. These are not sub-4 meter class. We will have something (similar) the (Hyundai) Creta. It is expected that the upcoming 5-seater SUV will be designed in-line with Volkswagen T-CROSS. This compact SUV will make its global debut this year, while production will commence in December 2019. It is based on MQB A0 platform that also underpins the new generation Polo hatchback. Previous reports claim that Skoda is planning a compact hatchback and a compact SUV for Indian market.
