The Indian automobile industry will witness several EV (electric vehicle) launches in coming years. Car manufacturers including Maruti, Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata and Kia have planned a range of new EVs across different segments. Here’s a brief on the upcoming electric SUVs from the major automakers.
Upcoming Mahindra Electric SUVs
Mahindra eKUV100
Mahindra eXUV300
The home-grown automaker has confirmed that it will launch the Mahindra eKUV100 in early 2022 and the Mahindra eXUV300 is expected to arrive sometime in 2023. The latter one will be positioned against India’s top-selling EV – Tata Nexon. The Mahindra eXUV300 will be the brand’s first vehicle to be based on the MESMA (Mahindra electric scalable and modular architecture) platform. The compact SUV is expected to be offered in Standard and Long Range variants that will offer range of around 200km and 375km respectively. The Mahindra eKUV100 will be the smallest and most affordable EV in the country. The mini EV will come with a 15.9kWh battery pack and electric motor delivering power worth 54.4bhp and 120Nm of torque. It will deliver a range of up to 150km.
Upcoming Tata Electric Cars
The company revealed that there is a possibility of the Tata Punch EV. The micro SUV underpins Alfa platform that’s compatible to electric and hybrid powertrains. The mini SUV might come with Tata’s Ziptron electric technology that will deliver range of around 250km-300km on a full charge. The same system powers the Nexon EV. The battery capacity and power figures of the Punch EV, however, might be different. With minor design changes, the electric version of the Punch will look different from the standard model.

Hyundai Kona Facelift
Hyundai Small EV
The 2022 Hyundai Kona facelift will come with improved design, new features and updated powertrain. The electric SUV will come in two variants – Standard and Long-Range – featuring 39.2kWh battery and 64kWh battery respectively. The Standard version can do 0 to 100kmph in 9.9 seconds and deliver a range of u to 167kmph. The long-range variant, on the other hand, accelerates 0 to 100kmph in 7.9 seconds and offers a range of 484km. The company is also working on a pure electric car that might arrive by mid 2023. The upcoming Hyundai small EV will measure around 3.5m or 3.7m and come with an 181bhp, electric motor.
Upcoming Kia Electric SUVs
Kia e-Niro
Kia Small EV
Kia e-Niro is reported to be the second electric car from the South Korean automaker in the country. The first will be the Kia EV6 sedan that will be launched sometime next year. The e-Niro will share its powertrain with the updated Hyundai Kona. That mean, it will come in two variants – Standard with 39.2kWh battery and Long-Range with 64kWh battery. Though, its design and features will be different from the Kona. With an aim to target the mass segment, the South Korean carmaker will bring in a Made-in-India small electric SUV in 2024.
