Built to take on the roads less travelled, the meaty SUVs are also relatable to speed. While SUVs are largely known for their off-road traits, Toyota Land Cruiser has now clinched the title of the world’s fastest SUV. The customized Land Speed Cruiser with a custom 2000-horsepower is claimed to offer a record top speed of 370.18kmph. The Land Speed Cruiser was driven by erstwhile Toyota NASCAR driver, Carl Edwards on a stretch of 4km at Mojave Air and Space Port in California.
In the first run, the SUV recorded 318kmph, whereas in the second run the speed spiked to 339.5kmph and in the third run the SUV hit top speed of 370.18kmph. It is to be noted that during the third stint, engineers allowed more boost to reach the engine, in a bid to achieve higher speed.While the customized SUV broke the previous record by 30kmph, Toyota claims to achieve higher speed on a longer piece of tarmac. The custom model gets the same 5.7-litre petrol V8 unit from the production car that features two additional large turbochargers. With the addition of two giant turbochargers, the engine guzzles air at a faster rate. Additionally, the modified engine gets stronger pistons, a custom-made intake manifold and rods that empowers it to produce massive power of 2000 horsepower. In a bid to handle the robust power and lightning fast speed, the engine is paired to a custom racing transmission that lends it strength and reliability.
Aside from a calibrated engine, the custom Land Speed Cruiser also getsdesign changes on the outside. That said the SUV has been lowered and comes with an aerodynamic body kit. The Land Speed Cruiser was first showcased at the 2016 Speciality Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show as a stock Land Cruiser with copious modifications by the team MTC.
While the Customized Toyota Land Speed Cruiser offers the highest speed, the Bentley Bentayga remains the fastest SUV in production guise with a claimed top speed of 301kmph.
