The success of Hyundai i20 and Maruti Baleno has forced automakers to think about entering into the highly competitive premium hatchback segment. In fact, upcoming brands including Kia and Peugeot are also considering launching their respective premium hatchbacks for Indian market. Here we bring you a list of top 4 upcoming premium hatchbacks in India in 2019 –

Tata 45X

Buoyed by excellent response for Tiago and Nexon, Tata Motors is now aiming to enter into new segments where it is not present. One such is the premium hatchback segment. At the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, Tata had showcased the 45X premium hatchback concept. In fact, testing of the hatchback has already been commenced on Indian roads. Tata has also confirmed that the production version of the hatch will go on sale in India in mid-2019. The 45X will be brand’s global product and will be equipped with a range of high-end comfort, convenience and safety features. It is expected to share engine specs from the Nexon SUV, which includes a 110bhp, 1.2-litre Revotron petrol and a 110bhp, 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel.

Toyota Baleno

Toyota and Suzuki joins hands to develop new technologies, platforms and electric cars for Indian market. Adding to it, Suzuki and Toyota will share each other products to enter specific segments. Toyota is struggling to mark strong presence in the mass market segment and Suzuki will help the Japanese counterpart to make in-roads in the sub-10 lakh space. Suzuki will provide the Baleno and Vitara Brezza to Toyota. The Japanese automaker will make some changes to design before launching in the market. Besides some design changes, the Toyota’s version of Baleno will be largely identical to the Suzuki in terms of interior and engine specs.

New Nissan Micra

Nissan has recently announced that it will launch a range of new cars from global line-up in India. The company will soon introduce the Kicks compact SUV, which will be followed by new electric cars and the new-gen Micra hatchback. The new-gen Nissan Micra will be based on Renault-Nissan Alliance’s CMF-A platform, which will also underpin the new-gen Sunny sedan. It is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine that also powers the Terrano. This engine offers two states of tunes – 84bhp and 108bhp.

Maruti Baleno Facelift

Seeing the growing competition in the premium hatchback segment, Maruti Suzuki is planning to give a major makeover to its popular hatchback – Baleno in India. The company will launch the Baleno facelift in the Indian market in 2019. The hatchback will receive cosmetic design changes and several new features inside the cabin. It is expected to receive the existing 1.2-litre petrol engine; however, the diesel version could receive a new 1.5-litre engine.
